It would be nice if people would stop stereotyping the Ninth Circuit as super lefty or something because they learned that stereotype in law school 25 years ago

The NYT coverage might not matter for swing voters. But it does matter for elites. We've seen that leaders of elite institutions are capitulating in advance. Media coverage that makes MAGA seem unstoppable likely impacts that. More attention to the scale of opposition might stiffen spines.

District of Nevada - Habeas Corpus Cases - Habeas Dockets

It's Oct. 18. The number of immigration habeas petitions in Nevada in October has already exceeded the number filed in September, which itself was likely a record. These cases represent a critical frontline in the battle over by Trump's mass detention policies. habeasdockets.org/dockets/cour...

Dear Secretary McMahon, Ms. Mailman, and Mr. Haley,
I appreciated the opportunity to speak with you yesterday.
I welcome further engagement around how we can (a) enhance the long-standing
partnership between the federal government and this country's leading research
universities and (b) ensure that higher education stays focused on academic
excellence. As I shared on the call, I do not believe that the involvement of the
government through a compact--whether it is a Republican- or Democratic-led
White House-
is the right way to focus America's leading colleges and universities
on their teaching and research mission.
Our universities have a responsibility to set our own academic and institutional
policies, guided by our mission and values, our commitment to free expression, and
our obligations under the law. Staying true to this responsibility is what will help
American higher education build bipartisan public trust and continue to uphold its
place as the envy of the world.
We remain open to other ways to work with the federal government to enhance
higher education.
Best,
Sian Leah Beilock
President

But Sassoon seems weirdly blind to the numerous cases of people on the left paying a steep price for speech condemned by the right. Especially after the murder of Charlie Kirk. This one-sidedness, whether from left or right, ends up undermining free speech rather than defend it.

Sassoon makes a deeply important point when she says that principles of academic freedom and debate β€œmust be defended even when doing so is inconvenient or costly.” It’s more profound than she may realize.

Sassoon is right that there have been hecklers vetos of right wing speakers on campuses. That’s contemptible, and against principles of free debate.

Opinion | I Resigned as Manhattan’s U.S. Attorney. Law Schools Are Missing the Point of My Story.

This op-ed from Danielle Sassoon makes two really important points about free speech on campus, but sadly is infected by the same disease the author diagnoses in others. She seems to think that people on the left face no threats to their free expression. Nope. www.nytimes.com/2025/10/13/o...
