In a field of poppies, a skeletal figure wearing a black and red silk cloak holds a smiling mask set on the end of a thin staff. Sweeping the cloak aside in a welcoming gesture, it reveals an antique key hanging from a ring about its emaciated forearm. The other arm is tied off with rubber tubing. Pronounced veins run the length of necrotic flesh. Beneath the cloak, chains wraps the torso, criss-crossing, secured by a padlock. The green tunic beneath is torn to expose yellowing rib bones. Atop its tilted skull rests a crown of mushrooms and a single bird wing. Its orbitals are dead black, and many teeth are missing. A syringe dangles from a loose chain around its neck. Another needle hangs from its belt with longer cord weighed down by a spoon. A long opium pipe with a bulbous end is tucked through the belt. A winding tree rises behind the angel of death, bare limbs branching like veins, blue against the purple haze of the misty backdrop.

All of the concepts I submitted for the 1982 Year’s Best Horror Stories cover were strong. If I had tried to guess which one would be chosen, the concept that became this painting would have been my last guess. 1/5

“Where are you taking us?” “Into the wild!” Here is my depiction of the Hobbits being lead towards the Tower of Amon Sûl or Weathertop for Tolktober🐰🐰🐰🐰🐺 I took a lot of creative liberties here and it is not quite accurate to the books, more so to the film as I love the scenes leading up to the knife in the dark at weathertop! This piece has been a long time in the making, finishing the drawing early this year and adding the border today! I’ve always loved the thought of depicting Tolkien’s story in some sort of redwall-like world and I think the little rabbits that burrow and live underground in our real world are the best candidates for hobbits! Then you have Aragorn or as the Hobbits currently know him as Strider the wolf as their guide! I hope you like it! Pencil Illustration with Digital border ✏️

Digital painting of Bilbo’s Hobbit Hole, Bagend. The sunsetting light glows into the interior from the large bay window, warming all the trinkets that lay around messily. There are maps spread across a large table next to a still hot teapot and mostly eaten cherry pie. The more you look the more you see many little Easter eggs from tolkiens story hidden around Bilbo’s home.

A pencil illustration of a sleepy gnome laying up against the stump of a large and over grown tree. A perfect spot for a nap, before or after a long journey. Or just if you fancy a quiet kip in nature!
