New episode alert. This past week I interviewed Von Babasin, son of West Coast jazz stalwart Harry Babasin: bassist, jazz cello innovator, label founder, and an unwitting inspiration for the bossa nova craze in Brazil. Plus plenty of stories and detail about the LA jazz scene in the 50s.

It’s not like I would actually secretly plan to go record shopping.

Wait. Actually, I do that often. But this was not that!

I’ve often toyed with buying this record, but never have. Wary of the gimmicky-ness of it. You recommend?

23.11.2024 17:07 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

It’s quite something. An avant-garde lineup, on an avant-garde (ish) label, but a track list of fairly faithfully played standards. Sort of a latter-day version of Coltrane’s Ballads.

Yesterday’s impulse-buy at Vinyl Envy Records in Victoria. 1979 black label issue. I didn’t leave the house with the intention of buying records, it just happened I swear. A brilliant record, breathtakingly play-it-three-times-in-a-row good. Cecil McBee sounds like he’s in the room. #jazzsky

Spun this tonight. I’ve had it for years amongst all my other Ninas, but had never really given it a proper listen. Wow. Sad, funny, brilliant, painful. What an epic, endless talent she had. A genre all of her own. #jazzsky #ninasimone
