well anyway that was all terribly uninteresting and took up too much time but c'est la blummin vie. I'll do a couple more quick bits and then I'd better be off to sort me tea out...

a view into one of the countertop formings showing a couple of raised bumps in the surface that'll need to be got rid of; the workshop lighting actually makes them look less lumpy than they are.

the same countertop forming with the bumps duly removed, mostly by trail and error, luck, fluke, or whatever you wish to wonder on.

One last thing to deal with - occasionally the formings will get a bit of dust under 'em and we'll get blebs in the surface, so I had to figure out a means of flattening 'em enough to not be noticeable, a bit of mucking about with a heatgun and a chunk of the same textured material, and:

...though that'll likely be a damn sight simpler to sort out as I think it's only got a dozen or so old wires to wrangle, compared to all that lot.

several stacks of the countertops, at various stages of trimming - they need to have a couple of trims at different settings before they're ready for off. There's about fifty to do this round, left and right handed, and another hundred and fifty to go.

meanwhile, turns out crawling about in the guts of this thing wasn't very good sciaitica-therapy, but blah. With the machine up and running again, it was onward with the formings!

a messy mass of wiring, dangling down from the junction-boxes underneath the heating-bed - and this is the new stuff! Essentially though just putting all the wiring in place, to worry about tidying up later.

a little colour-coding by way of dots of black and red sharpies, applied to the respective ends of each junction-box; ordinarily the wires themselves might be colour-coded to make it easier to make sure you don't literally get your wires crossed, but this is the next best thing; even so, these two particular junction-boxes, with their wiring for the system and the wiring coming down from each heater, do still present something quite messy-looking; multiply that mess across the whole series of heaters and yeah, it's quite a lot.

a view of the underside of the heating-bed showing the wiring for all of the ceramic heaters, rather more tidily tied up now; no doubt it still seems quite messy to many folks, but compared to what it was, sheesh.

new wiring throughout to replace the old, cracked, corroded and frankly scary system of stuff; I'll probably be doing all this again for the upper heater at some point, and for the other three machines, but as they're still all working ok atm it'll be when needed/ when time allows...

the ceramic junction-boxes from underneath the heating-table after having been ripped out of place during the removal of the heating bed itself; they still hold the scrag-ends of the old wiring, all of which will be removed as I sort all this lot out.

a single ceramic junction-box, showing the original 'slotty' screws on one side, and the more modern replacement ones on the other; the whole wiring 'system' had several different sorts and sizes of screws to contend with, but I replaced everything with screws of the same standard so that, if this job ever needs doing again, it can be done with just one screwdriver instead of three or four.

was all a bit daunting as it's been about five years since I did any wiring of this sort of volume, but once I'd got me head into it I realised it was actually slightly simpler than a fair few of the architecture-models I've wired up for lighting; I missed a bit - first thing was renewing screws:

a series of small ceramic heaters arranged on the lower heating-bed of a large vaccuum-forming machine; there are a few empty slots where individual heaters succumbed to age and breakage, like most of us do.

first up was re-positioning all the ceramic heaters that were part of the rippage; a couple were lost to age and accident so I'll have to get under this thing again at some point when the new bits arrive - works ok without 'em in the meanwhile though, so:

- this unfortunately meant also ripping out all the wiring to the heating-bed, which meant I'd have to fix all of that, too; being also thirty-odd years into use this was probably a good thing anyway...

Should've got some pics of the mess of ropey old wiring under there before I started, but heyho;

...turned out the reason for the pattern getting mashed was that the heating-bed of the machine, after some thirty-odd years of use, was buckled up to fuckity, which we found out immediately after mashing it again - so we ripped out the bed and sent it off to the smiths next door to straighten out;

the forming-pattern for a supermarket-checkout countertop, sitting in the belly of the beastly big machine that's used to create the vaccuum-forming of the thing; it's sitting on a scissor-lift table as it's pretty big and weighty, about four feet long and three across, and probably 60 kilos or so.

other side of the mend, showing the size of the chunk I replaced - about 8 inches long, 3 inches tall, and 1 and a half inches thick; it's glued and screwed to the main model, and filled and sanded smooth to facilitate the forming. There's a DeWalt drill sitting just above the rim of the 'wall' that gives some idea of the size of things.

in between being a fabricator as I'm now described, there's occasional need to fix the various tools and/or 'patterns'that get used in the vaccuum-forming that we do a lot of; this biggun got broke when it mashed up against the lower heating-plate of the machine, so I had to cut out and rebuild a >

5 fake rocks to be used as shoe-display stands, each with a pair of holes that will house supports for the display-platforms that are yet to be added; they are painted light grey in a fairly rough dry-brushed fashion, but unfortunately not to the client's liking. There is also a boulder to take care of for similar reasons, but it's not in this particular picture.

the boulder as previously mentioned, showing why perhaps the client wasn't that keen on the finish; it's executed well enough, but the methid probably works better at smaller scale - these 'rocks' are about a foot across and the finish looks perhaps a little starkly contrasting.

the same boulder, in more or less the same position, showing the rather more subtle paintjob; the overall tone of the rock is darker, but the shading is less obvious, for want of a better phrase.

one of the finished rock displays; two pistons rise up from the holes mentioned earlier, supporting a steel platform that'll support the shoe. Wires descend from each piston and inti the rock, but they're not actually doing anything, being merely decorative as part of the overall 'design'.

more shoe-display stuff; these 'rocks' were outsourced 'cos of me being off, and came back not to the client's liking, not least in the colouring - no time to do much about tidying up the texture, but a repaint was a fairly easy matter of grey primer, matt black, and olive, slapdash via spray-cans:

the same hoof, but now resplendent in a slightly metallic gloss black finish. There's all kinds of clutter and crapola in the background of the image, but none of it is important to the main focus of the image.

- sciaitica unfortunately carried on for the next 3 weeks too, but thankfully far less painful than the worst versions I've had of it before; just about diminished now, finally graduated away from sleeping on the floor only just yesterday, hooray.

Anyway; hoof-stuff for shoes:

Right, so - latest round of bodypart builds busted out/bussed out, first coupla days of week one; then lost the next few days to new + improved sciaitica down the other side than what I'm used to - lived like an animal for a bit as literally going about on all fours to avoid hurty standing-up stuff.
