I think in general the etiquette is to fill in the front pews first, and leave the back pews for anyone who has kids and might need to duck out early, or people who arrived late, so that the ceremony isn't interrupted. But you're right, horrible people can probably get a whole pew to themselves.

Weddings only reserve the first 2-3 pews for family members, and then generally say groom's guests on the right side, bride's guests on the left side. Other than that it's a free for all at literally every wedding I have ever attended. You get an aisle seat if you show up early and claim it.
