Catastrophes cost the world $320bn in 2024, reinsurer reports Losses rise by 30 per cent as climate change takes its toll

As LA is on fire thanks to Exxon, now is as good a time as any to say that climate disaster costs are increasing 30% each year

And yet the right still insists we can’t afford climate action

Cartoon. Title: A Traditional Holiday Blessing. Six frames. May the road rise up to meet you (a parent and their child going on holiday in a packed car, singing). May the wind always be at your back (parent putting up a tent in a gale and child tumbling in the wind). May the sun shine warm upon your face (parent with a burnt face and child looks surprised) May the rain fall soft upon your fields (parent wading through flood waters towing child in an inflatable) And until you’re safely home again ( exhausted parent and sleeping child in a car heading home) May you not get campylobacter ( An engaged toilet with a groan coming out)

Cartoon. Title: Optics. PM Christopher Luxon and Minister of Finance Nicola Willis, in superhero clobber, with a $ insignia on the front. They’re superhero Cyclops. A silhouette of the Beehive in the backgound. CL is pointing at his one good eye, saying, β€œWe are laser-focused on the economy”, and NW says, β€œYes, laser-focused” Then she focuses her cyclops laser eye on a person in the lower right corner, and says, β€œWhoops! There goes one of the common people!” as she incinerates them.
