Huntsman spider guarding egg sac, Borneo
Huntsman spider guarding egg sac, Borneo
I just know that many of you saw yesterday's yearbook preview and thought, "I wish I could see that spider up close!"
Here's a better view of the mama Huntsman guarding her egg sac, as well as another female Huntsman doing the same. Do you see the newly-hatched baby just below Mom #2?

Thanks, Neyvin. Definitely made for a fun cover subject (and made me glad I didn't have to use bear cubs again).

Bull bison billowing steam on a winter day in Yellowstone.
Someone just ordered some greeting cards this morning. It's another example of how my photos can be used to create any number of gifts in my Pixels storefront. Ornaments, tote bags, apparel... uh, shower curtains. You name it.

Shield bug, Borneo
Check out this amazing shield bug spotted by my client April during October's Borneo tour. I've never seen this type of pattern on an insect before (I believe it's an immature individual).

Soon it'll be time to start sharing my Year in Review content, including my "Not Quite Best" and my favorite images and moments of the year. I wonder where these cubs will show up on the list?

Malayan Colugo, Borneo
We had some solid colugo (a.k.a., "flying lemur"... it's not actually a lemur) sightings in Borneo, including a few that were alert and curious during daytime hours.
Borneo is the land of odd flying critters: we saw colugos, flying squirrels, flying frogs, flying lizards, and even a flying snake.

I suppose if you dove the three feet off the boardwalk into the mountain of bat poop that would be pretty traumatizing.

Long-legged centipede on the wall of a cave in Malaysia.
A white, naked baby bat has fallen from the ceiling and landed on the giant mountain of guano in Borneo's Gonmatong Cave. It is doomed.
Hundreds of cockroaches crawl over a pile of sticks inside the Gonmatong Caves in Borneo.
Back to Borneo: The Gonmatong Cave visit was one of the main highlights for me on this trip. It was my first time there (closed during my last visit), and the amount of cool stuff inside was just wild.
Here we have: long-legged centipede, a baby bat fallen from the ceiling, and oodles of roaches.

Random pull from the archives: A gathering at a carcass in Yellowstone's Lamar Valley back in January, 2013. Coyote, Bald Eagle, and Common Ravens are seen here. Wouldn't be surprised if there was a magpie around as well.

Harlequin tree frog, Borneo
I'm glad you all enjoyed yesterday's monster find. Here's another close-up subject from Borneo, which is somewhat more benign (in terms of size): a harlequin tree frog. This is the most common frog we typically see during my night walks in Danum Valley.

Malaysian giant katydid, Borneo
Meet the Malaysian giant katydid, the world's largest katydid species. Borneo does elephants small, and insects huge... things are completely backward there.
(This, by the way, is a male. Apparently the female is even bigger.)

Instead of a photo, here's a short video from Borneo. Normally I don't condone handling of wildlife, but something was obviously stuck beneath our truck. You might say we were a bit surprised about what our guide pulled out...

Smooth-coated Otter, Malaysian Borneo
The biggest surprise of my Borneo trip was seeing otters. Though I was aware of the presence of otter species in southeast Asia, we'd never come close to seeing them before. The smooth-coated otter was my third new otter species this year!
