My once and future home!! :) My favorite night there was spent at a VERY fancy wedding, where several of us got to climb up to the ball at the VERY top of the Smith Tower!! It was snowing up there, too, so we were in a literal snow globe! :)

Portland's pathetic "grass & geese" Waterfront Park. The problem is not the park itself but what's ADJACENT to it: Naito "Parkway!" Ban the cars and line Better Naito with mixed-use. Then, you'll have FOUR parallel *epic* people-friendly corridors, creating an incredible "front yard" for Portland!
Nyhavn in Copenhagen shows that having people *live* by the waterfront actually *activates* the waterfront! Who knew?!?!?
"Green spaces" vs. mixed-use #housing on a major urban waterfront.
#Portland's waterfront will always be "grass & geese" unless they *ban cars* on Naito from Clay to Glisan.
The problem is Naito "Parkway!!" It's all cars, blank walls, & empty #parking lots. Line Better Naito with mixed-use housing

City populations are so misleading. Jacksonville is Florida’s “biggest city” at 991K. Miami is just 456K.
But if Jacksonville had Miami’s density, its population would be ~4.4 million!
Granted, Miami is also the world’s most suburban metro area (93% live in suburbia).

The problem with Waterfront Park is Naito!! We need to *ban all cars* on Naito from Clay to Glisan.
Secondly, line all of Better Naito with live/work housing! Only then can Waterfront Park be activated!

Chart showing incredible frequency of Philly's historic trolleys
#Philadelphia's Center City trolleys have amazing frequency. Coolest transit rides, too! No other trolley system in the U.S. has anywhere *near* this level of frequency.
#Philly is the absolute BEST, challenges and all. :)

And *please* make ALL of Post Alley car-free! Activate those alleys!! People > cars.

Every square inch of greenfield development since 1960 needs to be de-paved and re-wilded as soon as possible. There's more than enough room for everyone within this footprint.
Metro KC alone spans > 5M acres! If all 2.1M lived within 1M acres, that's just 1344/sq mile. @thewaroncars.bsky.social

I had a heavenly time biking in Seville not long after this super ambitious (and shockingly inexpensive!) project was completed.
U.S. cities are sooo far behind the rest of the world in prioritizing PEOPLE over CARS!

Massive empty parking garage fronting a six-lane stroad in downtown Harrisburg. The more parking that’s offered, the WORSE businesses do. No one seems to get this!!
I have *tens of thousands* of photos of empty parking lots (and massive empty parking garages!) directly adjacent to beautiful blocks that were developed before private CARS (and semi trucks, pickups, etc) completely took over!
I can’t wait to shame every elected official in the U.S. about this.

Rail-trails are so enjoyable because we don't interact with CARS at all on them! The more cities & towns I visit, the more I can't stand cars in what should be vibrant, PEOPLE-filled districts.
And remove I-95 in Center City! And convert BF Parkway to prioritize people over cars! Obvious stuff!

YouTube video by Alan Fisher
Why Rails to Trails are Problematic /// HovCity Ebike
@alanthefisher.bsky.social is SO right about how the one thing we don't "rail" against enough while praising rail-trails is that our infrastructure is entirely *private-auto-based*!
I love rail-trails, but replacing CAR space w/ active transpo is much more important! www.youtube.com/watch?v=QaDW...

Replace this ridiculous GAS STATION right downtown with HOUSING! Preferably 1000 units! And put Forster on a massive road diet!
It figures that the blocks of 3rd St downtown that have the highest retail vacancies are the blocks that have the MOST space reserved for both the movement and storage of private autos! Civic leaders will NEVER understand how prioritizing CARS of PEOPLE absolutely ruins cities!!
Forster is SIX lanes, plus two parking lanes. Remove a car lane in each direction and replace it with dedicated bike/bus lanes. And that building is hideous beyond belief. :)
The blocks of downtown Harrisburg that offer the most space for both the movement and storage of cars have the highest % of vacant businesses.
I have yet to hear of a single U.S. elected official who *truly* prioritizes PEOPLE over CARS, either budget- or policy-wise. @caryw.bsky.social

OMG, yes! #Paris has made INCREDIBLE #cycling and land use progress over the past decade! Even notoriously car-choked and noisy #London has made great strides!
Paris probably has a higher number of delightful (and people-filled) blocks to stroll than any other city on Earth.
