“I don’t know if I’m the first one to think of this, but…” Spotted on social media... The damage inflicted to a plane by a bird strike. I don’t know if I’m the first one to think of this, but what if we put a big magnet on the nose of the plane so it creates a magnetic field that repels the birds away? I'm not 100% sure, but I'd put good money on the fact that you were the first one to think of this.

Another video A quieter video. Because this morning, I did try to watch a bit of the live stream video that I suggested to you yesterday. But wow. It was a tough watch. Mainly because of the Boksburg accents and the general varbe, boet. It's Dawie Louw Drarving A Nissan R Thurty Farve Skar Larn, Rarnd The Rart Hander, Klaapping A Tarm Of Free Forty Farve Point Naught, Boet.

Speed Classic Cape Town Car racing is not really my thing, but there's been a lot of buzz about this inaugural hill climb around the slopes of Table Mountain (it's actually a bit more Devil's Peak, but who's counting) this weekend. Up to 10,000 spectators expected, and a lot of road closures and pain for anyone working in town and living down south, but...

The whole Milnerton High School thing is awful, but on the bright side, now that it's been exposed, all the toxic rugby-related issues at South African schools are surely completely finished now, right?

I mean, Milnerton was the only place that sort of stuff happened, right?

Right?

Right.

The return of Mock The Week? But… Well, yes. But actually, maybe. Or not? Metro reported thus: The scariest thing about this was that it was apparently four years ago. I thought that it was 2023 or something. And with a whole Google search, it turns out that neither of us were right. The last episode was on the 4th November 2022. That's not even three years ago yet, let alone four.

We keep going Another win, and this one after we'd been really poor in the first half. And then we went and scored three goals. I don't know what happened, but it looked like the same old, same old when we got to half time, and then someone put a firecracker under our collective arses in the second period. Still, I'm not complaining. My only gripe is that the excitement and adrenaline prevented me from sleeping for quite a lot of the night.

Another day, another car park Gone are the days of the twice weekly sojourns to the old car park in Milnerton. But Tuesday afternoons bring me to a different car park at the moment. We nearly died getting here. In slow motion, sure, but still. The Stanhope Road bridge in Claremont - IYKYK - was like the Wild West this afternoon, with four lanes of taxis, Checkers bikes and old women in Mercedes fighting it out to get into the one remaining lane over the bridge.

Buys Ballot’s law I honestly thought* when I saw this that it was how Trump "won" the election, but as probably all my readers already know, Buys Ballot’s law is: the relation of wind direction with the horizontal pressure distribution named for the Dutch meteorologist C.H.D. (Christophorus Henricus Diedericus**) Buys Ballot, who first stated it in 1857. It's a rudimentary method of estimating the position of varying centres of local atmospheric pressure from the prevailing wind direction.

First home win It's almost November. I shouldn't be writing that title. But it happened, despite the BBC's best efforts to pretend that it didn't: O'Hare with the only goal, and I think that even this image - taken as he wheels away to celebrate - somehow sums up our season so far: Everyone going in different directions, Japhet Tanganga slightly unfocussed. The only bit that looks more positive are some happy faces in the crowd.

Yesterday, I discovered Derek Paravicini I mean, discovered for me. He was already very much about, like when the KhoiSan when Jan came to the Cape and the Indigenous Americans when Chris went across the pond. I just found out about him for the first time yesterday. Who is Derek Paravicini? Derek Paravicini is one of the most extraordinary pianists and musicians of his generation, yet he is blind and has severe learning difficulties and is on the autism spectrum.

High landing? Slow news day? You can rely on the gutter press in the UK to try and make a story out of nothing. Thankfully, you can also rely on the good old British public to not let them get away with it: He's got a good point. Although I've had a couple of really low landings that didn't really work either (Corfu 2002 and London City 2023 springing immediately to mind).

About those lemurs Yesterday, we filled you in on how to identify your raccoons. Not that hard, given that there are only 3 species, and they are pretty much geographically distinct. Your only real issue is around Panama, which is pretty much the same as when you are traveling the length of the Americas. Today, we're upping our game a bit and bringing it back to Africa (and North Carolina), with a great guide on how to tell lemurs apart.

Know Your Racoons Almost forgot to blog this evening after a bit of a weird day. So quickly let me educate us all on racoons: There's absolutely no need to know this information in Africa (unless you are heading for a pub quiz), but then you never know when you might be heading for a pub quiz, so here it is. A good night for the football Not had very many of them recently, and not the biggest fan of international football, but both South Africa and England are on their way to North America for next year's World Cup. England's progression was a bit of a foregone conclusion, but Bafana Bafana needed to put last week's rubbish performance behind them and win, and hope that Nigeria did the business over Benin. All the things happened, all the stars aligned, and so it was a good night for the football.

It was going quite well I've been rearranging spring cleaning my office, and it's taking a while to get done. Mainly because other tasks keep getting in the way. But I had no excuse this afternoon, when I was tidying out a cupboard and found a couple of old hard drives. And then started looking through the tens of thousands of photos on them. I took this in January 2019.

Pub quiz issue When your pub quiz round goes awry because people - allegedly intelligent, educated people - don't know what an anagram is. Honestly, I have no words. And if I did, they would be all jumbled up. If you're going to struggle you're supposed to struggle on getting the answers correct. Not not knowing what a fairly straightforward word in the question means. How can you not know what an anagram is?

I’ve been using Amazon and...? And I'm pretty impressed. They've entered into the fray in SA with a mountain to climb in terms of getting market share in online shopping delivered to your door, given that Takealot have been around for a long while here with virtually no opposition. But Amazon have started small and sensible: a limited product range, but each one with the guarantee that it will get to you cheaply and quickly.

How Science works It's not rocket science. Well, I suppose some of it is. The bits with rockets, most specifically. But generally, science works by using the Scientific Method: a tried and tested method which has been around for millennia and which has stood us in (very) good stead during that time. Ask a question, answer that question in your head by forming a hypothesis, test the hypothesis with experimentation, draw a conclusion, report, rinse, repeat.

New diet drink Look, we could all* maybe do with losing a couple of kilos. And eating healthier isn't always financially viable, or very pleasant. And so we can cheat a bit with drugs or Professor Cookbook's fad diets. Or this new diet drink. "Blasts fat and food" it says. And those are the two major causes of extra weight. So this sounds perfect for getting rid of that pesky extra weight quickly and painlessly.

100 up That's a full century of consecutive weeks of achieving my Health Insurance exercise goal. See? I've been doing some rudimentary calculations, and I think that takes us back to November 2023. I would have had more weeks, but I'd just had Covid (again). Which rather ruined a birthday trip away. But since then, I've attacked the gym on a regular basis, added a bit of running and the odd game of football, and while it certainly doesn't get any easier, I'm actually feeling ok.

Ace of Base on a Dutch Street Organ I mean, need I really say more? It was always a happy, poppy song anyway, but the jauntiness of this is weirdly infectious. Life is tough sometimes I know that this correlates badly with yesterday's post, but wow. It's not like we're a million miles away. It's just not quite happening. And as I've said before: the teams that win the league are the ones who can play badly and get away with it. We're playing ok, and we're losing. And that doesn't fill me with confidence.

Of course, these days, you'd be looking at the ridiculous price of pixel light if you were moaning about a blank screen. And while it doesn't cost much to light a single pixel, apparently, you need bloody loads of the things for them to work properly.
