i find it really interesting the way sci-fi ages. im super fascinated by sci-fi that nails the speculation so well that it never feels dated. ive seen some people say they don't like to read older sci-fi because it's no longer "relevant" but imo the best sci-fi is timeless...

been reading revelation space and it's interesting how dated a lot of it feels despite only being 25 years old. meanwhile another sci-fi book i read recently, permutation city, which is 6 years older, felt much more current to the point i could have believed it was written today

yeah, unfortunately it's not possible to tell unless we actually go and look into what a person/company means when they say "AI". even genAI can be useful, but many have developed a very negative perception of it due to the way capitalism is pouncing on it

and if you do not have the bandwidth to inform yourself on Yet Another Thing, then it's okay to not engage with discourse. no one should be expected to have a take on literally everything. acknowledging that you're not informed enough to have a strong opinion on a particular issue is good, actually

absolutely keep raising concerns about copyrights issues, environmental impact, and the incompatibility of automation with an economic system that forces people to have a job in order to survive. but please actually *understand* these issues instead of regurgitating what you see on social media

would love for ppl to inform themselves and think critically about what is bad about AI instead of having automatic negative reactions every time they see the term. there are many instances where it is harmless, useful, or essential. do you think every plane is bad because some planes drop bombs?
