The History Behind My WIP: No Particular Importance The inspiration for this book came from a favorite History Channel on Facebook: History with Amy. You can find her videos here: One particular video focused on Caroline of Brunswick, the unfortunate wife of the prince regent. In that video, I learned that Caroline often adopted children. She was lonely, and her access to her daughter was tightly controlled. Then came the

The Lady of the Thorn Launch The Story Behind The Lady of the Thorn A Regency Romance Rooted in Arthurian Legend There are certain legends that never truly leave us. They linger at the edges of the countryside — in thorn trees that bloom when they should not, in rivers that feel older than their banks, in family stories that refuse to settle into mere superstition. I have always been drawn to those kinds of myths.

Confessions & Correspondence: Elizabeth to Mrs Gardiner Welcome to our epistolary retelling of Pride & Prejudice! Jane Austen's original version of the story, First Impression, was told entirely in letters, so it seemed like a great group project. We'll be posting a new letter every Wednesday.  Elizabeth to Mrs Gardiner Longbourn, 25 February 1812 My dearest Aunt, I must begin by entreating your forgiveness for the long delay of my reply, and assuring you that it has arisen not from indifference, but from a succession of occupations which have laid a most unreasonable claim upon both my time and attention.

Elizabeth is not a Bennet Elizabeth is not a Bennet. It’s a common, even favorite, trope in fanfiction. Elizabeth isn’t really a Bennet. But why do we love it so much? Elizabeth and Jane, to most readers, stand out among their sisters. They are the most rational and level-headed, they don’t embarrass the family in public, they conduct themselves like young ladies should. Are they perfect?

Austenesque Relationship Advice…in Just Six Words! Happy (Almost) Valentine's Day! Lately, I’ve found myself wondering what relationship advice Austenesque characters might give their future children. So, I “invited” our favorite characters to share their advice here, on this estimable blog! (There was some bristling at this request; indeed, a few characters found it quite shocking to share such private words with the public! But even the proudest, through hard experience, have learned that they have no control over what I make them do.

Peering into Jane Austen’s Spectacles I spent most of December in England, celebrating a dowager’s milestone birthday (er, that is, mine!). It was not primarily a Jane Austen-centered trip; throughout my long lifetime I have most satisfyingly visited nearly every Austen-related site that I desired to see. (To confess the truth, I have not climbed Box Hill, but I may yet!)  Still, I am not so much changed as to be able to spend time in England without seeing…

A peek into a Georgian townhouse – Part 2 I posted last week about my visit to a recreated Georgian townhouse in Bath, UK, that I had the opportunity to visit this past summer. My previous post was all about the "upstairs"--the rooms the gentry would have spent all their time in. Today's post is about the other half (or more!) of the inhabitants of the home--the servants. We start by making our way downstairs and through the arch that leads into the kitchen.

Confessions and Correspondence It's a new year with new beginnings, lovely readers! What goes better with new beginnings than a new writing project? We, the authors of Austen Variations, were so happy with how well our "Pride and Prejudice: The Untold Stories," and "Prelude to Pemberley" were received, we wished to continue the fun, but with a slight twist. Beginning next week, we are going back to our roots...actually, those of our dear Jane who said, "Let other pens dwell on guilt and misery." And we agree!

It’s Still Christmas at Pemberley: The Fifth Day of Festivities On December 29th in Regency England, Christmas was not over. In fact, they were right in the middle of it. Under the traditional church calendar, the Twelve Days of Christmas run from December 25 to January 5, with Christmas Day itself counted as the First Day. That makes December 29 the Fifth Day of Christmas, smack in the middle of Christmastide, when the feasting, visiting, and general merriment were still going strong.
