i’ve read incredible ff of characters from scifi/fantasy worlds translated into modern day no magic settings but it only works because 1) suspension of disbelief & 2) you KNOW the character relationships and personalities and backstory because they’re already established even it they’re changed!

and the worst thing is that you can always tell when a book was a fanfiction because the characters never feel Right. in ff you are able to rely on the fact that you know a character’s backstory but when when published it’s just… empty.

i would reread but i am hesitant. not because it’s an absolute behemoth but because it destroyed me so viscerally 2 years ago that i cannot bring myself to pick it up again without getting terribly emotional.
