Apparently certain natural chemicals in tea and coffee are unfriendly to most plants. You may not be having a problem because it's only a fraction of the whole soil mixture.

I read somewhere that both tea and coffee grounds should be composted prior to using as a growing medium. I looked it up because my houseplants didn't seem to like it when I put used tea leaves into their pots so now I compost everything first.
