7. These withdrawals will affect research and science. Many of these bodies (such as UNCTAD and IUCN) generate widely used data, while others (notably IPCC and IPBES) are leading science/policy org.

08.01.2026 13:13 — 👍 2    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

6. Several of these org are hybrid. They are not purely intergovernmental bodies, but operate as public private partnerships or multi stakeholder platforms. This includes IUCN, REN21, and the 24/7 Carbon Free Energy Compact. It is surprising to me that such organizations appear on the list.

08.01.2026 13:13 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

5. I do not find the cost argument convincing. US contributions represent a negligible share of the federal budget, and several of these org rely on voluntary funding. If the objective were to reduce spending (to hurt their mission), this could be done without withdrawing from membership.

08.01.2026 13:13 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

4. Several of these org function more as deliberative forums than as regulatory agencies. They have no mandate to impose rules on the US in any way. It is difficult to see how they could run against US interests. It is generally in the US best interest to remain "in the room where it happens".

08.01.2026 13:13 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

3. Some of these organizations were created under US political leadership, including the CEC, the Global Counterterrorism Forum, the Partnership for Atlantic Cooperation, and the UN Democracy Fund.

2. At least 16 are directly related to environmental protection, including major ones such as UN-REDD, the CEC, the IPCC, the UNFCCC, IRENA, IPBES, and the IUCN.

1. Several of these org rarely make the headlines. They are not controversial. Conversely, some politically sensitive organizations are not listed, such as the WTO. Is this a strategy to create leverage over organizations in which the US remains a member.

The US is withdrawing from several international organizations, including 31 UN org and 35 other org. A few reactions:

To be clear, we are not naïve optimists. Damage has been done and will be done. However, under a different institutional architecture, the outcome could have been even worse.
