Just finished reading Ethan Kross's new book, Shift, on how to manage your emotions effectively. It's great - readable, practical, comprehensive, human. I've drawn on his work a lot over the years, and if you have ever enjoyed my writing about resilience I'm sure you'll love this.

It's an excellent time of year to show some gratitude to anyone who has made 2024 a little better for you. Here's @pilitaclark.bsky.social in the @financialtimes.com with some stats on why praise matters so much in the workplace: on.ft.com/4ftJh1Z. Thank you for reading! (See what I did there...)

Daniel Kahneman, Who Plumbed the Psychology of Economics, Dies at 90 He helped pioneer a branch of the field that exposed hard-wired mental biases in people’s economic behavior. The work led to a Nobel.

Oh my goodness. Daniel Kahneman has died. I am so grateful for his life and his work - it has shaped so much of what I do, and shaped so much of how we all think about human behavior. RIP and thank you.

What If I’m Wrong? - By Daniel Dennett - Behavioral Scientist Good thinkers frequently ask themselves this question, the way good doctors frequently check their practices against the Hippocratic oath they swore.

"What if I'm wrong?" I'm always looking for questions that are easy to remember but have positive impact on our quality of thinking, this is one of my favorites. Read why it's powerful in this extract from @danieldennett's new book 'I've Been Thinking.

About 100 sheep follow a runner closely behind them on the trails in Central France. #runner #sheep Runners are no strangers to animal encounters while out running on the trails. Sometimes animals even find their way into races. Sometimes it can even be dangerous.Thankfully, nothing baaa-d happened. Artist Eleanor Scholz came across the runnerβ€”and about 100 new friendsβ€”while hiking in central France, near Puy de DΓ΄me. According to Sheep 101, sheep instinctually gravitate toward flocking behavior. β€œThey will run from what frightens them and band together in large groups for protection. This is the only protection they have from predators. There is safety in numbers.”

Love this video of a runner accidentally ending up leading a flock of sheep in a forest. Sometimes that's what leadership feels like, especially leadership that's not about formal authority but about an idea that catches other people's imagination.1/2

And it looks as if increased flexibility in work arrangements has supported that, by making it easier to find a balance and avoid burnout (respondents say). Very useful data.
