I wanted to add a Blade Runner-y glissando when you start the game, but I don't really have that Vangelis-licensing-money.

So I recorded my Finnish kantele and added some air-conditioner hum and fiddled around in Audacity. It's not Vangelis, but... #gamedev

Some great game dev advice, I forgot where I read it:
If you can't find the right texture or sound for your game, just take a picture of something, or record an audio file. (The sonorous bell that rings on the main menu in "Mysteries of Old Tokyo" is just me tapping a glass, pitched down ๐Ÿ˜บ) #gamedev

On a bit of a presentation tune-up today. Added some more visual interest and a reusable animation node that has things sliding in from off-screen. It already looks approximately 15% fancier! #indiegames #gamedev

Does anyone know a good crash course or tutorial on game UI design? Things like colours, themes, styles, animations on buttons, etc. I kind of want to get away from the "default theme" look. #gamedev

I thought I had but actually I hadn't! I love the look of Innkeep. There's not enough games in this genre of "simulator but you can walk around and talk to people" (I guess "immersive job sim" is a good description!)

I expanded the game resolution to 1920x1080, but it doesn't feel right to use anything more than 4:3 for the main window. As a concession, I thought I'd add sticky notes at the edge for the player to keep track of useful information as they play.

A big load off my mind. I'm really excited to give the game extra polish and features without having to rush it.

Today, I found out it's probably actually better for marketing if I take part in the Jan/Feb Fests _before_ release, which means I should get a demo in Jan and release some time in Spring 2026.

Yesterday, I got burned out on development. I have been planning a demo for Steam Next Fest in Oct, and the game released for Detective Fest in Jan 2026, and it started to feel like a lot. #indiegames #gamedev

Tunnet on Steam Build, debug and optimize a computer network in an underground facility.

Shout out to Tunnet, which is great.

I love gameplay mechanics where you bring "light" into the "darkness" by building a network in harsh terrain. Either literally (like torches in a cave in Minecraft) or figuratively (the zip lines in Death Stranding, Ethernet networks in Tunnet, etc.) #games #gaming

And you'll need them, because if you try to walk across Tokyo too much, you'll get tired and have to go for a nap (inspired by actual events).

Big day of work! The player found their legs and can now walk around the great city of Tokyo, discovering train stations as they go.

You can now board trains around Tokyo to save your stamina - for the price of a ticket. #indiegames #gamedev #tokyo #trains

I promised myself I would have a complete working gameplay cycle for the first chapter of "Mysteries of Old Tokyo" by 31st July.

Then I got stuck on a bug and gave up and went to bed.

But I do have a complete working gameplay cycle today! ๐ŸŽ†

I love those lines of history that start: "Why is..."

- Why is there this strange monument in Tokyo?
- Because there used to be a bridge.
- Why was there a bridge?
- Because there used to be a canal.
- Why was there a canal here?
- Because Ginza was built on ancient marshlands by the sea. #tokyo

Originally, I was just creating resource files manually in Godot, writing text in Notepad, pasting it in and then linking the resources in the Godot IDE. It was pretty awkward!

Pleased with this. I was dreading setting up the game database in Godot's IDE (40+ postcards, 150+ sub-locations, images and text files), so I built a data entry tool in Godot to edit and save resource data. This will make setting up the game data a breeze! #gamedev

For example, the modern Yamanote line from Ueno to Shinagawa runs along an ancient cliff face that once overlooked Pacific beaches and fishing villages.

One of the things that fascinates me about Tokyo:

On one level it's an endless flat sprawl of concrete and tarmac, homogenous from Chiba to Hachioji.

On another level (literally) it has these vast geographical landmasses underneath it, that still inform the development of the city today. #tokyo

The "time loupe" in my game is cool when images overlap exactly, but looked kind of lame for e.g. Kyobashi because the area is almost completely different now.

I came up with this idea where you flip between the two images to find non-exact "parallels", which works nicely! #indiegames #gamedev

Today, a good chunk of downtown Tokyo lies where the Inlet used to be, including the Imperial Theater (brown building at left) and the grey-white columns of the historic Dai-ichi Seimei Sogo building to its right.

This was once the sea.

The Imperial Palace moat is all that is left of the Hibiya Inlet, which reached to Tokyo Bay and the Pacific beyond. After Edo Castle (right) was built in 1457, the inlet started to be filled in and today the moat is some 10 km from open water. #tokyo #hibiya #geography
