The great thing about history is that every day, there is just a tiny little bit more of it🐭

Not a carpet or rug to be seen. It gladdens Mouse's heart🐭

It is an maxing survivor, because it dates to the last phase of building C15🐭

Nave, next to choir screen #StGeorgeDunster #Somerset

Victorian stone carved pulpit masquerading as a C15 original. You can tell, it's an over-elaborate pastiche (if you don't believe Mouse see the beautiful medieval examples in Mouse's timeline) #SundaySermons #UberGothic

Nave looking east #StGeorgeDunster #Somerset

A wide screen divides the nave to create a choir leading to the crossing. The roof, like so many Mouse encounters, was once a wagon with plastered panels, now stripped back to it's underlying structure. This is an impressive church

If you zoom in and look at some of the imagery you can see an empire built on exploiting distant lands and slavery from C17 onwards🐭

Elaborately battlemented single stage porch, with diagonal buttresses. Tomorrow we PIFAP. You will not be disappointed #StGeorgeDunster #Somerset

Welcome to the priory church of St. George in Dunster on a very grey wintry day. C15 but with echoes of earlier C12 and C13 buildings. Cruciform with south porch. Mouse heard tell of amazing things inside #StGeorgeDunster #Somerset

Every week Mouse has the tricky task of choosing a #MouseFavouritePhoto and this week was no easier. This photo though captures the anticipation of a first visit to a new heritage site. So near... and yet so far #DunsterCastle #Dunster #Somerset

And as #FireplacesMeanFarewell, what of #DunsterCastle #Dunster #Somerset? The remnants of a medieval castle subsumed by a Victorian home. The interior is not to Mouse's taste but the exterior is a building detective's dream. Mouse award 4/5 #MusVisit 🐭🐭🐭🐭

As sure as #FireplacesMeanFarewell, Mouse move on. But not moving on that far for this leg of the #ScamperDownTheSomersetCoast, you can see Mouse's next destination from #DunsterCastle

Wonderful C17 over mantle #DunsterCastle #Dunster #Somerset #FireplaceFriday

On one level this seems quite saucy for it's time, but on another there are strong hints at Britain's darkest history

A Mouse #TwoFah one; a fine fireplace and a (possibly) even finer coat of arms. The portraits are the type where human eyes appear instead of the painted ones and literally follow you around the room #DunsterCastle #Dunster #Somerset #FireplaceFriday #LesArmoiriesDuVendredi

Just to prove that it's not just church door fittings that have an enduring allure; the door to the tenant's hall #DunsterCastle #Dunster #Somerset. The 'pear shaped' door pull is a recurring design motif from the earliest medieval doors on. Double key holes too #FerrousFriday

Once you're in, you're not getting out . The crypt of #DunsterCastle #Dunster #Somerset. Typical C13 square set window with tapered monolithic lintel and cill. You sometimes see those appearing as spolia if you ever wondered what they were. Serious bars too #FerrousFriday

For lovers of big knockers everywhere. This, on the main gate of #DunsterCastle #Dunster #Somerset, is a whopper. Those rose head nail studs are pretty impressive too #FerrousFriday

Time for Mouse's #FridaysBitsAndPieces from #DunsterCastle #Dunster #Somerset. The bits and pieces Mouse didn't get to share in the week. After Mouse climbed up that big hill, she was a bit disappointed with the castle. Turned out the real thing was behind her

Time for Mouse's #FridaysBitsAndPieces from #DunsterCastle #Dunster #Somerset. The bits and pieces Mouse didn't get to share in the week. Mouse long held the view that Victorians saw the shouldered arch as emblematic of medieval architecture. This is off the entrance hall

The door to the Tenant's Hall #DunsterCastle #Dunster #Somerset

A rather fine planked, filleted and ledged door with styles that extend over the semicircular head. C17 and really rather pleasing #AdoorableThursday

The Tenant's Hall #DunsterCastle #Dunster #Somerset

A C17 addition, built on the C15 gatehouse and essentially continuing the style of the original building (something Mouse approves of). It's so realistic that Mouse could barely see the join either physically or in style
