Losers: I'm writing my masterpiece. It's a deeply intelligent, philosophical, and deliberate reflection of existence and has a 5 minute cricket sound interlude

The B52's: This is a song about going to the beach and seeing weird shit. It fucks harder than anything you have ever heard

You should read it. It's impossible to summarize.

They have beef with the Satanic ghost of Benedict Arnold. It's a truly insane story that puts the Bicentennial and the hangover from Watergate in a blender, part of a DC sub-genre of mid-'70 nightmares about the American experiment possibly failing - the lead story in this book is another:

DC loved to reprint that Man-Bat story: I first encountered it here:

So sad to share that legendary colorist Tatjana Wood has passed away at the age of 99. Her pioneering painterly touch graced scores of DC & Vertigo series. She was truly one of a kind and a special friend. May her memory be a blessing.

Wonderful color artist Tatjana Wood died 3 days shy of her 100th birthday… her work within the limited palette of four-color comics was always impressive and added mood. Important to remember as modern comics reprinting often relegates original coloring to the dustbin of history.

I'll pick up Vinson's #TopShelfFriday theme with one of the handful of Batman stories drawn by one of my favorite artists, Mike Grell.

And, as I said above, the Compact Comics must be selling, because now the store has dipped its toe into carrying a few regular DC trade paperbacks.

My independent bookstore has long stocked a small selection of indie graphic novels - Maus, Persepolis, Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands, etc. - and even carried a few of the Taschen Marvel books, but the DC Compact Comics are the first ordinary DC or Marvel books it has stocked in a long time.

My local independent bookstore is carrying the Compact Comics and recently started stocking a few DC trade paperbacks on top of that. I assume they’re selling well.

What If Aunt May Found Thor’s Hammer? I’ve got more ideas where that came from, @Marvel

I agree with everything you say. They combined incredible and original musicianship, especially on the first two albums, with records that actually sold, both the first two albums and Cosmic Thing. They should have been in years ago.

I’d agree, but something that goes hand-in-hand with that is the perception that they’re silly or Not Serious. They had too much fun for a certain sort of rock fan to accept. But they 100% should be in.

Another new read this week that I enjoyed. Very similar to Ultimate Spider-Man in that it deals with the MJ Question in a way that the mainline series can't, although it tries to have its cake and eat it too when it comes to resolving that question.

Ultra Boy: What’s up with the symbol on his chest? Does it mean β€œI look stupid?” Also the fringe around the boots is silly. Why is he wearing a wrestling belt? The color scheme doesn’t work. Just a mash-up of every dumb costume idea combined into one.

What the show’s creators did with set design, lighting, and the primitive special effects technology at their disposal remains pretty incredible without any tweaking or editing. One thing the remasters show clearly is just how much mileage they got out of colored lighting effects.

I dunno, a mark of a great book is that it can be β€œspoiled” & it doesn’t matter. One suspects that most first-time readers of Madame Bovary have some general idea of Emma’s fate before they begin. Knowing that her marriage ends badly doesn’t really matter, it’s learning how it ends badly that does.

24.02.2026 23:56 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

No, I don’t think the writers ever would have come up with this story if the unaired pilot hadn’t been sitting there on the shelf.

24.02.2026 23:47 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

… the remastered effects look better, but they don’t call attention to themselves by showing off, β€œLook what we can do now!” They just take what the original FX artists were trying to do with the technology of the time and give it a little helping hand, without going crazy with revisions.

I’m usually a purist when it comes to wanting to read, watch, or listen to the original version of a creative work, but, in the case of Star Trek TOS, I do prefer the remastered effects. Again, I feel like whoever updated the effects did so in a way that honored the spirit of the original creators …

… one suspects that readers are just going to have to find writers whom they trust to have written their books by themselves. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a boom in acoustic folk music and other sorts of genres that are more human and less mediated through technology. We’ll see.
