A black and white poster by Thane Kerner for the February 27, 1992 show at Trax in Charlottesville: Dinosaur Jr, My Bloody Valentine, "plus - just added" Superchunk. OK, I was there, and miraculously sober enough to remember. Well, I don't remember Superchunk... who I've seen a bunch of times and who were always amazing, so that speaks more to what came next. Trax was not a large room. I think it was basically where the hospital power plant is now. It was dark, and the beer fumes in the air were palpable. I can't remember how much MBV I had heard, if any. In any case, I was thoroughly unprepared, refusing the urgently passed around hearing protectors. The set was amazing, and amazingly loud, but all the shows at Trax were amazingly loud, just never-ending jet plane strafings and slow motion explosions. There is an album by The Oogies, which to my discredit I've never heard, but whose title I have taken to heart: Feedback Is An Act Of God. God acted all over us that night. For that tour their set closer was "You Made Me Realize". At that point I was entirely without ego. So they get through the song and they hold a chord. And got somehow louder. And louder. And then all the lights blew. The speakers died. For seconds nobody knew what was happening. Is this part of the set? But then we noticed, the monitors were still working. They had blown up the speakers, but were STILL PLAYING. Behind us, the sound engineers yelling and feverishly working and then everything came back online and from something like silence to 100 dBs of feedback and a Chord and then it was over. Then Dinosaur Jr came on but they had been rendered entirely superfluous and to be honest they were never really my thing and I couldn't hear them at all, Dino Jr, the loudest band on the planet or some such, and I went home after two songs.
