"Stop gawping, you sod," he grumbles, resuming his march onwards. "Don't have all bloody day."

Soap's smile is a soft, secret thing behind Ghost's back.

Ghost straightens with a grunt and nods once, and Soap has the feeling that if they weren't currently still knee-deep in their op, still wearing their tac gear, then he'd have shoved his hands in his pockets like the world's most awkward teenager.

The duality of this man is astounding, Soap thinks as he watches. He's never seen anything like it, the way he's like stone one second and then this awkward, gruff, soft-hearted sod that goes about helping fucking snails. It's so painfully endearing that it makes his teeth ache.

As he's crouched, Soap can see the blood spattered on Ghost's jeans — he shot a man in point blank range, stared him in the eye as he took his life, and now he's gingerly placing a snail on a sad looking leaf because he didn't want it to get trodden on.

"I didn't want it to get stood on," Ghost murmurs, and that might be the slightest tinge of embarrassment colouring his voice as he turns and sets it down gently on a patch of thin, half-dead grass a little off the path.

It's not small, but there's something about the way it turns its head, the way it gets absolutely dwarfed by the size of Ghost's hand, that makes it seem so innocent and vulnerable. Delicate, almost.

They both stand there for a beat, staring down at the creature, silent.

"Snail," he grunts, bending down. Soap opens his mouth, frowning, confused, because so what? But then Ghost turns, just enough for Soap to see the snail past the width of his shoulders, sat placidly on one finger.

So, when Ghost suddenly stops his earth-shaking, marching trudge he doesn't realise until his face is shoved into the back of his tac vest.

"What—?" He grunts, hand coming to brace himself against Ghost's thick bulk.

Soap hates mud — hates the squelch, the wet give of it underfoot. It's raining, and his trousers are soaked with it. He's cold, he's tired, and he's miserable. He's mostly zoned out as he follows Ghost to the RV point, cheering himself up with thoughts of pints and warm food.
