Zoro’s changed his clothes since his dunk in the water, from his usual outfit into some sort of kimono – the fabric looks light and airy, despite its dark colour. Appropriate for the balmy weather. Sanji’s fingers itch to open it and see what he’s got underneath, let it fall from those strong, slender shoulders right here on the deck. He’s so distracted by the thought that it takes him a moment to process Zoro’s reply. “Maybe,” he says. Just that one word. “Aw, love.” Maybe Sanji’s had a bit too much to drink himself; he sees the way Zoro’s eyes twitch at the endearment when it slips out, sees him scan the deck quickly to see if anyone’s close enough to overhear. “Don’t worry about it. I’m a big boy, I don’t really do birthday shit.” He gazes around at the crew, Luffy dangling upside down from the mainsail yard, Usopp trying to slingshot cake into his mouth from the deck below, Nami rosy-cheeked from the mojitos, cheering them on. He feels himself smile, contentment in his veins like the buzz of the nicotine. Something long-awaited, and all the more satisfying for it. “Besides, this is exactly what I wanted.”

I feel you, I can't even fault younger readers. They were constantly fed this diet of immediate passive dopamine hits that they truly don't know how to work outside non-algorithm spaces. Even Tumblr becomes too much for them to negotiate. Ao3 is landmine for them.
