In the Odd style stat blocks are pretty short. I think I would just duplicate the entire thing. It's easier for the GM, they don't have to reference multiple documents.

Obviously not. If it has combat and magic it's a war game, not a role playing game.

"TTRPGs can't do romance or intrigue."

NO. Play more games.

Back Again from the Broken Landβ€”Full Edition by Cloven Pine Games a short Powered by the Apocalypse tabletop RPG of small adventurers sharing stories on a long walk home

Back Again From the Broken Land? The pitch is "what if the hobbit's journey home to the Shire was an RPG campaign".

I've played and run it, it's great. It's the game D&D promises but doesn't deliver. It's my favorite for high fantasy shenanigans. Here's a long thread with my thoughts. I wrote this before playing it but I stand by everything I said.

If a dungeon with monsters and treasure is a stereotypical OSE module, what's the LEAST stereotypical module?

I'm thinking Kidnap the Archpriest or Barkeep on the Borderlands, but I know there has to be more.

Yes but but the same is true to 5e, B/X, Cairn, Mork Borg or really any game that's popular. It's not a PbtA problem, it's a game design is hard problem.

I don't know but now I want to play some war games.

That's a good point re "slop". I agree that there are some copy/paste PbtA games, but then the same for B/X and D&D. Calling it all slop just feels like hating on something because it's popular.

Saw someone claim there's a lot of PbtA "slop" being published.

. . . Is there? Legit question. Maybe there is and I just don't see it.

Haha I actually wrote "exceeded by 100%" then went that doesn't look right and changed it.

I've sold two copies! That means I've exceeded my sales goals by 200%!

(I like to set easy goals for myself.)

This mystery includes to tri fold pamphlets. One is entirely in fiction. Hand it to the players as their Mavens walk into the museum. The other is similar, but includes everything the GM needs to run the mystery.

Do you like creepy dolls? What, no?! Oh well.

New Brindlewood Bay mystery! The sixth annual Creepy Doll Contest is about to start, but the curator (Dr Engelbert von Offenbach, of course) has been murdered!

High five, low five, down low too slow five, five finger death punch and a nice crisp fiver.

Anyway, my point is if all you've played is Apoc World, Dungeon World and Monster of the Week I can understand how "all PbtA games are the same" feels true. But the real solution is to just play more games.

26.11.2025 15:59 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

And Dream Askew/Dream Apart were the first games (I think? Someone can fact check me.) to really take PbtA concepts and do something radically different with the game mechanics.

. . .Okay I just fact checked myself and Blades in the Dark came out a few years before Dream Askew/Apart.

26.11.2025 15:59 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

It doesn't help that the first few PbtA games were copy/pasted from Apoc World. Dungeon World and Monster of the Week are the worst offenders and also happen to be the most popular PbtA games. Monsterhearts was the first PbtA to tweak the rules in meaningful ways.
