I'm sorry for all the folks affected by layoffs recently. It's not much easier in the indie space and most of us are just getting by. If you are thinking about starting up a studio or going indie, I'm happy to share what I've learned running a small studio for the last 8 years with a remote team.

Game developers don't talk nearly enough about how normalizing long dev cycles has been absolutely ruinous the games industry.

We used to do AAA games in 2-3 years on the regular. Now it's "4 years in prepro, 7-10 years in dev."

That's a terrible business, if you're not a guaranteed hitmaker.

Find your pockets of influence and do what you can. If you don't have any and you have the emotional bandwidth, then make them and do what you can. Show up for your community. Show up for those less fortunate than you. Live to see another day and do it defiantly.

People are responding to this with confused outrage (the ‘outrage’ part is fair fwiw), so as a reminder: lay-offs are to appease the stock market and Phil is saying this to shareholders.
The company isn’t worried about making you mad because you, ultimately, don’t matter. Only shareholders do.

This is a rough week (in a rough year in a rough decade) for the game industry.

Be extra kind and supportive to those that have lost their jobs, whether it's sharing other role openings or just being a friend they can talk to.

It's not you. It's them. It isn't your fault. It's theirs. You didn't do anything wrong. They did.

They fucked up. Not you.

Laying off thousands of people so that your numbers look better for the quarter while making many more billions is such a f'd up reality. Making numbers go up forever is not sustainable and never was. What a colossal waste of talent and then later the cycle goes back to hiring and acquisition again.

Are you an artist in video games with experience hiring and working with junior-level devs in your craft, and feel VERY VERY STRONGLY about studios needing to plan for and hire into these roles? Hit me up, I'm scheming. 😜

For sure! Breakups with romantic partners sometimes have a clearer path for moving on, and we often rely on friends for support. But with friend breakups its like...how the hell do you move on from something you didn't expect to end? It's like learning an entirely different language of grief.
