Not really true in Ireland- the Gender Recognition Act came in in 2015 with very little fuss. Healthcare has always been terrible yes, but the general discourse didn't get so poisonous until quite recently.

I once brought a young family stuck out in the countryside and completely isolated in terrible direct provision accommodation to story time in the library, and the dad snuck behind a bookshelf to cry at the sight of his toddlers having fun in a welcoming group and his wife smiling #LIW25 2/3
