A photo of a book titled Sumud: Essays, Memoir, Fiction, Poetry, and Art from the Markaz Review. The book cover has abstract images of swirling lines resembling barbed wires. The green box on the cover says A New Palestinian Reader, edited by Malu Halasa and Jordan Elgrably. Next to the book are three postcards depicting a Balinese bull race, jasmines, and Palestinian food with the text "long live resistance".

Read Palestine Week 2025: day 4. An anthology of 58 essays, poems, artworks, and fictions on Palestine. They are the expression of "sumud" (steadfastness). More than just survivorship, this concept describes remembrance, revitalization, and record-keeping; an act of everyday resistance. #Booksky

Mohammed El-Kurd reads from RIFQA, and a poem by Padraic Fiacc | Irish Writers for Palestine
YouTube video by Irish Artists For Palestine Mohammed El-Kurd reads from RIFQA, and a poem by Padraic Fiacc | Irish Writers for Palestine

Reducing Palestinians to "helpless women and children", the "perfect victims" that are not allowed anger is an extension of the idea that liberation is threatening. It reminds me of a poem by Irish poet Padraic Fiacc that El-Kurd read, which depicts similar sentiment: www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGfG...

Read Palestine Week 2025, day 3: A dismantling of the politics of defanging that force Palestinians to constantly audition to have their humanity acknowledged, to always be palatable and not be angry. A tactic you'll recognize when deployed against, say, trans and Indigenous communities. #Booksky

A photograph of The Eyes of Gaza: A Diary of Resilience book by Plestia Alaqad, placed on a kefifyeh. The book cover features close up of Plestia's eyes under the blue press helmet of Palestinian journalist. Next to the book is a postcard with the image of doves that resembled warplanes. There is a poem written there: In order for me to write poetry that isn't political, I must listen to the birds. And in order to listen to the birds, the warplanes must be silent, by Marwan Makhoul.

Read Palestine Week 2025, day 2: a memoir in the form of Plestia Alaqad's diary entries as she shared her on-the-ground observations, reporting, personal life, and stories of Palestinians in Gaza as the genocide unfolded. Honest, strong yet vulnerable, with jolts of humor here and there. #Booksky

I love that Muhawi and Kanaana emphasized the importance of the oral tradition aspect and criticized tendency to "sanitize" folktales. Many of their notes added new layers of meaning and cultural contexts, such as specific racy anecdotes over details of one story, shared by an elderly storyteller.

The earliest known letter by Tolkien was dictated to his nurse as a 4-year old, addressed to his father, Arthur (14 February 1896). It was never sent because his mother, Mabel, received a telegram that day, saying that Arthur had hemorrhaged. He died the next day. #TolkienTrewsday #TolkienTuesday
