Red kites taking domestic cats is another misbelief. We have had an expansion in numbers & range in N Leics & all sorts of myths are emerging. The heavy road traffic is rarely invoked for cat mortality - tho kites do use roadkill.

PS it is brilliant to see a big kite over the garden…

In theory, the BA Small Grants scheme is open to independent scholars. Depending on topic, British Council and Arts Council might be worth a look.

Text stating: One of his favourite pursuits was eating Stilton cheese. He would leave the cheese out for a while then wrap it in paper. When the paper began to rustle he would unwrap it and eat the maggots filled with Stilton, with a pin.

A colourful image of a stained-glass window with three human figures. A figure in a blue robe with yellow halo is kneeling in front of two old men with long beards and head-wraps. One of the old men is pointing to a passage in a book on his lap. Pieces of glass in the faces of all three figures are missing due to vandalism.

Home | Domesday Book The first online copy of Domesday Book of 1086: search for your town or village in Domesday Book, find population and tax records, and see the original Domesday folios free online

Great news. A new edition and full translation will be very welcome. Searchable online like Domesday Book is so important (I love that site opendomesday.org)

St Fagans: Bronze Age gold jewellery stolen from musuem Police are investigating a burglary at St Fagans museum in the early hours of Monday morning.

Awful news from Wales, the St Fagan's Museum has been broken into and prehistoric goldwork has been taken. Its painful to think what objects might now be at risk. Thoughts with the museum team who must be devastated, all speed to the police and a curse on the crooks.

This book applies the innovative work-task approach to the history of work, which captures the contribution of all workers and types of work to the early modern economy. Drawing on tens of thousands of court depositions, the authors analyse the individual tasks that made up everyday work for women and men, shedding new light on the gender division of labour, and the ways in which time, space, age and marital status shaped sixteenth and seventeenth-century working life. Combining qualitative and quantitative analysis, the book deepens our understanding of the preindustrial economy, and calls for us to rethink not only who did what, but also the implications of these findings for major debates about structural change, the nature and extent of paid work, and what has been lost as well as gained over the past three centuries of economic development. This title is also available as open access on Cambridge Core.

Ah, β€˜fermeture exceptionnelle’ of the Nantes municipal archives, became the slogan of my PhD research. Hand-written, cellotaped to the door on an ad hoc basis during the 2 months I worked there! 1985. The archive was and still is on the rue d’enfer.

Happy days!

Why was behind the impetus to develop parochial buildings in the #medieval period so strong? Dr Meg Bernstein investigates this, particularly in reference the addition of north and/or south aisles to an existing church, in her blogpost for us:

In this month's blogpost, Dr Emily Betz writes about anti-Quaker propaganda.

Using the language of #medicine, opponents of #Quaker beliefs attempted to paint them as mentally unstable, their understandings of faith less spiritual revelations than medical complications.
