A rumour on social media brought dozens of fortune seekers to a field on the outskirts of mining town Springs
On Friday, I went to Gugulethu an informal settlement in Ekurhuleni. A mechanical digger was at work filling holes, bringing an end to a brief but intense gold rush.
It brought to mind the gold rush that created Joburg and also the desperation of so many South Africans, when unemployment is 42%

Tens of thousands of people in Kabwe, including thousands of children, are suffering as a result of contamination left behind by lead mining, most of which occurred during British colonial rule. The mining company responsible and the UK must ensure justice and restitution for the people of Kabwe.
