65 years ago today, the newly operational USAF Ballistic Missile Early Warning System (BMEWS) radar at Thule, Greenland, mistook the rising Moon for a huge Soviet nuclear attackβ€”triggering a false alarm while Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev was in New York City attending the UN General Assembly.

A color map titled "Jupiter IRBM Emplacementsβ€”Gioia Del Colle Air Base, 1960-1963" adapted from a map in an official document showing the location of all the Jupiter missiles deployed at Gioia Del Colle Air Base in Italy from 1960-63 (numbered in the order in which they were activated), along with the date the missiles were activated and deactivated and the driving distance to each location from Gioia Del Colle.

65 years ago todayβ€”during warhead installation and checkout operations on a US Air Force Jupiter IRBM at Gioia Del Colle Air Base in southeastern Italyβ€”three explosive bolts accidentally fired due to a power surge, causing the nose cone and 1.4-Megaton W49 warhead to fall 6 to 10 feet to the ground.

Screenshot of a Powerpoint slide. The title is "Strategic Effects." It has three bullet points: 1. The physical employment of nuclear weapons at any level requires explicit orders from the President. 2. Nuclear weapons are unique in their destructive power and psychological impact. 3. The use of nuclear weapons represents a significant escalation from conventional warfare.

There is then an incongruous illustration: a screenshot of the game MISSILE COMMAND for the Atari 5200 (1982).

Wild illustration choice in this slide from training materials for ICBM launch officers, ca. 2010

The US government is shut down, but we still have ~1,770 deployed nuclear weapons on 400 Minuteman III ICBMs, 280 Trident II D5/LE SLBMs (on 14 Ohio-class SSBNs), ~65 B-52H and B-2A bombers, and at six bases in five NATO Europe states, plus ~1,930 more warheads in the reserve force. So, no worries!

More diamond stamping showmanship, as a quality engineer should be only one stamping components. Also, don’t think they can even show canned subassembly most likely classified

Why President Trump should put off the new nuclear arms race for one more year Extending the New START nuclear arms control treaty by a year, even informally, would be a security and diplomatic win for the United States.

I really appreciate the @thebulletin.org publishing my thoughts on why Trump should accept Putin’s offer to extend New START nuclear caps for one more year.

thebulletin.org/2025/09/why-...

US does not need more nukes (yet) to deter China and if we race, Russia could build more than US can.

Today in 1996, the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty opened for signature at the United Nations. President Bill Clinton signed that day, as did representatives of 70 other states, including nuclear-weapon states China, France, the Russian Federation, and the United Kingdom.
