our workshop "uncertainty visualization in data journalism" at univ. of applied sciences hamburg brought together data journalists to reflect on how uncertainty is handled in journalistic work and how it can be communicated more effectively.

Dabei setzen wir auf wir Animationen, interaktive Techniken und 3D-Darstellungen, um die Auswirkungen von Unsicherheiten auf innovative Weise zu vermitteln. Um einen nachhaltigen Impact zu erzielen, kooperieren wir mit Datenjournalist*innen aus der Praxis.

In dem Projekt entwickeln wir innovative Methoden zur Datenvisualisierung, die Unsicherheiten visuell kommunizieren und es Menschen ohne Statistikkenntnisse ermöglichen, die Auswirkungen von Unsicherheiten in Daten intuitiv zu verstehen.

Zum 01.12.24 suchen wir an der HAW Hamburg zwei engagierte Teammitglieder für das angewandte Forschungsprojekt „Transparenz durch Unsicherheiten: neue Ansätze für intuitive Kommunikation von Unsicherheiten an Nicht-Wissenschaftler*innen im Datenjournalismus“ (18 Monate)

wollte auch nur darauf hinaus, dass man bei diesen werten für cdu und afd nicht davon sprechen kann, dass die cdu vorn liegt. es gibt keinen statistisch signifikanten unterschied (ohne die schwankungsbreite zu kennen, aber...).

💡 our recommendations:
effective uncertainty visualization design should:
1️⃣ support analysts in developing strategies for using uncertainty information,
2️⃣ ensure that uncertainty is not ignored,
3️⃣ help define acceptable levels of uncertainty for filtering, and
4️⃣ avoid hiding uncertain data.

We identified three strategies how participants dealt with uncertainty in the data: ignoring the uncertainty, filtering by uncertainty & utilizing uncertainty information to strengthen, question, or refine hypotheses based on the data.

🔍 why is this important?
data always come with uncertainties that are often ignored, limiting their usefulness (e.g., uncertain covid-19 numbers due to unreported cases). Despite the importance of understanding this uncertainty, there are few guidelines or procedures for incorporating it. (2/x)
