i just finished the bad batch arc of the final season of clone wars, so i only have the final arc to go, and it's just incredible to me how fundamentally more important to the fabric of the ongoing narrative to star wars that show is when compared to the prequel movies themselves

it just has literally everything the actual prequel movies lack: drama, emotional conflict and stakes, characterisation and emotional growth and change, action, adventure, sweeping romance, heartbreak, fucking... Story.

now, the glaring answer here is that the prequels were clearly written, intentionally or otherwise, with the notion that palpatine has read the script of the movies he's in and things have to go the way they do for him to "win" and thus the separatists are a sockpuppet to use war to create an empire

obviously, it's been noted that practically every frame of the prequels, particularly the phantom menace, features some racist caricature in the form of an alien species, but that's the extent of the thinking.

there's simply no attempt at exploring what a separatist state actually wants in the end.

it's insane to me how lucas spends no time in the films exploring what the separatists could actually want and in the cartoon, they're suddenly a vaguely islamic-coded terror state

one of the wildest things about rewatching the clone wars (2008-2020) immediately after rewatching the prequels is how the separatists go from a functionally useless "bad guy" that has little to no actual on-screen ideology and exists purely as an excuse for the clone wars to happen in-universe...

i'm just shocked to see people i otherwise respect so shaken by the idea that newspapers will placate the wealthy in order to make money

individual journalists, yes, may hold to a personal moral obligation, but that's something that can still be overturned by their employers professional obligation to make money

this idea that the news media has any moral or professional obligation to the truth and/or justice is the great lie told by the media to the public in order to furnish its singular and only goal: to sell the news for profit

And the giant elephant in the room is how these nerdy niche subcultures have quietly become the loci for such radicalization in because the folks who examine these sorts of societal shifts have been as susceptible as any to dismiss the legitimate reach and impact those "childish" subcultures have.
