We must make politicians and journalists pay for their lies if we want to live in a democracy. Any statement that they could reasonably be expected to be know to be untrue should have serious consequences including significant prison time.

Except we need a test as to whether they *should* have known a statement wasn’t true. Too easy to claim to have been ‘mistaken’ otherwise.

More than that. A new offence of misleading the public is essential, with guilty politicians and journalists arrested, charged and imprisoned. Democracy cannot support all the disinformation they currently get away with.
