If you wanna be radicalized against GenAI, try running an online business while these thieving shitbricks try to scrape your site at all hours of the day, creating a looping, endless DDoS.

Fuck generative "AI." It's all slop built on wholesale theft.

A black and white woodcut print showing a coyote headed child. They are surrounded by stylized blackberries, oaks, pines, and deer tracks. They are reaching into a thorny blackberry bush for a berry, while eating another berry from their hand with a smile. The title underneath reads "A wilderness you kind of miss"

A black and white woodcut print of a coyote headed person, standing stiff with their head low as they hold a taught wire around their neck. They look back with a scared expression towards a crowd of headless people, one of whom has a reassuring hand on their shoulder. You Have To Care How thoughtless art paves the way for AI slop and how I'm freeing myself from it.

Did low effort content pave the way for AI? While it's easy to blame big tech, the recent onslaught of slop caters to an audience that has proven time and time again that they prefer quantity to quality. I talked about what it looks like to reclaim your taste and, by extension, your self respect.

But that was about to change with the introduction of Neopets. The website, launched in 1999, was essentially an attempt to ride on the coattails of Pokemon’s massive success. Users could adopt cartoonish pets, give them names, and battle with them. While it seemed like a game on a surface level, it was something slightly darker: proto-social media for children. The pets were the reason everyone was there, but each user had an individual profile and the ability to send messages to others. It even had its own version of an endless feed in its β€œNeoBoards” feature. This is where the real hooks sunk in.

Some threads were conversation starters, but most were just people’s loose thoughts. Each press of the refresh button refilled my screen with more strange perspectives to embody. Over twenty five years later and I still remember thread titles like they’re my friends’ old phone numbers.

There was so much to read, so much to consume, and the time would flow away like it was nothing. It silenced my thoughts and without knowing what I was giving up, it felt like a respite from the developing neuroses that I was still mostly keeping to myself. The screen became a bright, beckoning light in my living room, a sun I could stare into with impunity and vanish for a moment. When I did, I’d lose myself for a moment, becoming everyone and no one. Eventually, it was harder to pull myself away.

Wrote about internet addiction, how it hijacks impulses towards anxiety or compulsion, and of course, Neopets.

A study based off the piece β€œAbove Below” by Sachin Teng

β€”-

Image shows an anthro striped hyena upside down in the water from its neck up. Its expression is neutral. There are a variety of fish and plants underwater framing the face. The tones of the image are neutral, with most of the submerged objects painted in muted blues, whites, and pinks πŸ³οΈβ€βš§οΈ. The hyena itself is painted in darker shades of rust/red/brown.

The overall tone of the illustration is anhedonia.

I like the part of my job where I help people see the humanity in it, all the decisions made that lead to that final product. When people see that, it usually gets them excited too.

Missing out on that to make soulless slop to make yourself look cool and knowledgeable makes me wanna vom

Just found an AI wine account on my IG feed and I have so many thoughts lmao

Part of what excites me about wine is when I see the connection to the humans who put their hearts into making it. Part of why people are intimidated by wine is because it seems fancy and out of reach.

I’m sharing this video again because people don’t really get what these data centers and ai are doing to our planet and our communities. Especially Black communities because they were strategically placed there.

I need you to listen to these people.
