In 1950, Alan Turing famously proposed what would become known as the Turing test: an observer is tasked with corresponding, in text form, with two characters A and B. One of them is a person, and the other is the machine in question. The observer’s task is to decide which one is which. As is so often the case, the ideas behind the test must have been in the air in some sense. Essentially the same idea, called ABX testing, was proposed by two researchers at Bell Labs (of the transistor). Munson and Gardner published their test one month before Turing’s paper: here, a person is first presented with two known stimuli, A and B. Then they are presented with stimulus X, and asked to decide whether X is an A or a B.

In their case, Munson and Gardner were concerned with audi- tory signals. The ABX test can be used to investigate the hearing of participants—say, if you want to know what the highest frequency is that someone can reliably detect. More commonly, however, the test is used to evaluate the quality of lossy audio encodings like MP3 (an encoding that includes only a part of the original signal). The same is, of course, true for Turing’s test—perhaps we could use it to test people for their ability to detect comput- er-simulated faux persons—but generally, it is thought of as a test to be passed by the machine in question. From that perspective, it is clear that the machine’s task isn’t to “think” or be “general purpose” (neither of which is a particularly well-scoped task). Instead, the machine’s task is to fool the observer into saying it’s the person. In other words, sidestepping the problem of scoping “general purpose machines,” “thinking” or “intelligence” means living in the liminal space between perception (by a person) and deception (of a person). Perhaps the occult desire for animating our golems lurks in the background still: what else is the Turing test, but the desire to make the machine come to life? And once the AI golem appears animated, who holds the secrets, who bears that arcane animating knowledge that even the researchers profess not to have? Who is left, but the machine itself!
