In my new article I suggest that even well-intentioned films about migration often frame it as chaos, crisis, danger, and disruption.
This is misleading because most international migration is regular and safe.

The Migration Movies Database

This has probably been the most entertaining research project Iβve ever worked on thanks to many great conversations with friends and colleagues.
The database is available here: datawrapper.dwcdn.net/aiSfx/68/
I would love suggestions on how to expand this work.

Migration in films is portrayed as crisis-driven, irregular, dangerous, and in the Global North: a βspectacle of human mobilityβ and a βNorth-bound bias.β
In reality, most migration is regular, safe, and refugee-hosting and migration-receiving countries are largely in the Global South.

Thanks a lot, Cas. I think the high number of requests, especially in this period of the year, has to do with the many fellowship programmes we have. Your suggestion on urgency helps me put things in perspective.

It may be difficult to implement for requests from project partners that come with some sense of urgency, but it is a very good suggestion for requests from younger researchers.
I know that @casmudde.bsky.social does something similar with international office hours.
Thanks Sonia!

Question for colleagues who are a similar stage in their career: how do you handle requests for βa quick callβ from possible project partners and younger researchers?
I receive around ten of them every week. If I accepted all of them, most of my working time would turn into calls.

Chicago's O'Hare claims U.S.'s busiest airport title, but Atlanta disputes losing crown
Has a new airport taken the crown for America's busiest airport away from Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson? That depends on who you ask.
Last year, O'Hare International Airport in Chicago might have been the busiest airfield in the US (and, consequently, of the world) taking the honor from Atlanta.

That's a great reference, I did not know it.
I agree, but I also think that the goal should be improving existing mechanisms and ensuring that they work without the significant delays and risk of arbitrariness that are currently built into the system.

I personally approach these issues with attention to what can be responsibly and realistically pursued under non-ideal conditions. Of course, I have great respect the position of others who place greater emphasis on ideal principles and long-term moral aspirations.

True, although in my opinion it would be even better to create stable regularisation mechanisms rather than one off measures introduced through government decree.

I have not followed this particular case, but many people seem to be outraged. In Italy it is quite common for academics to go into politics (e.g. Romano Prodi, Enrico Letta, Domenico Fisichella...).
