By studying both oral history and video/broadcast journalism, I get the best of both worlds. I’m empowered to pick the medium for the message—which I first considered with my arts training. Different stories have different needs.

But now I have the training to make that. Plus, I can make the snappier 3-min and 1-hr versions that large groups of people will watch, share, and write about. I have the network to maximize communication and expression. And the ability to discern what should be sacred.

When people ask why I transferred from the Columbia oral history program to Columbia Journalism School, the simple answer is this: The average person won’t listen to an 8-hour interview on post-colonial identity.

Not much worse than a person who simply doesn’t listen. And deep listening? That’s a gift.
