A map of the US with each 2025 billion-plus dollar weather and climate disaster geo-located on it. Source: Climate Central
After the US admin cancelled the $B Climate + Weather Disaster dataset, @climatecentral.org hired the scientists who ran it and set it back up.
Now the 2025 numbers are in: it's 3rd highest year on record and highest year w/o land-falling hurricanes.

A screenshot of the abstract, reading: "Around the world, there has been a turn towards governments that are sceptical of the importance of academic freedom, distrustful of scientific knowledge that does not support their policy agenda and dismissive of international fora for science-based policymaking. Here we discuss what this global autocra-tization means for sustainability science and policymaking, presenting global data but discussing trends in the European Union (EU) and the USA as case studies. We argue that those of us who are sustainability scientists and environmental policymakers face a clear choice: keep our heads down and hope to weather these rough political waters or react to the political tide by actively supporting academic freedom and dialogue on sustainability."
Thoughtful piece by my @science.nature.org colleague Rob et al. discussing the implications of global autocratization for science.
We face a clear choice, they say: keep our heads down and hope to weather rough political waters...or choose to actively support academic freedom + sustainability.
