Five African grey parrots at Lincolnshire Wildlife Park in the UK, named Billy, Eric, Tyson, Jade and Elsie, were separated after they began swearing at visitors and laughing together. Adopted in August 2020 and placed together in quarantine, during that period they began teaching each other profanity and developed this vocabulary while having a good laugh togheter. The park’s chief executive, Steve Nichols, explained that the more the birds swore and the more staff and guests laughed, the worse it got, and with children expected on weekends the decision was made to remove them from public view and separate their display. The park later introduced a strategy of mixing the foul-mouthed birds with a larger flock of more well-behaved parrots in the hope their bad vocabulary would be diluted. While many visitors found the spectacle entertaining, the move was primarily for visitor comfort and bird welfare. According to zoo staff, the parrots would hurl profanities at unsuspecting guests and then laugh uproariously together, encouraging even more mischief. “It just made them worse,” said the park’s chief executive, Steve Nichols. “When one swore, the others would start laughing, and before long, it sounded like a comedy club.”
