Themes of acceptance ANYwhere are generally good. SF can draw interesting parallels rather than make direct references which, I think, can make the reader see things in a broader light, and make us think beyond a specific example.

Just finished this "autobiography" of the SFWA's 14th Grand Master, A. E. van Vogt.
It really rambles. Events are not linear or structured well at all.
BUT!
It's really a direct transcript of several recorded interview sessions, so it's all top-of-mind recollections. Engaging and very personal.
