I think I want to write up a series about manga composition, or at least my method of doing it

So at least when it comes to the older generation of male editors, I still feel a bit on edge and sad that I’m not even too surprised about aspects of this awful scandal.

He gave some half-assed apology about the example he used, but I just couldn’t believe that someone like that could work for a shoujo magazine. I’ve had my share of rough times with editors but to this day that was the worst.

I remember leaving feeling really defeated that day.

He gave an example of how I needed to put more conflict in my work, making a hypothetical story about some fictional version of myself who is promised she’d be published, but in return finds out that she has to sleep with her editor for it to happen. I was shocked.

He had bragged about the aspiring mangaka (keep in mind this was a shoujo magazine) he had brought to tears, and said that at my level, I’d only be embarrassed to see my work next to real professionals. Which, maybe was true, but it was what he said next.

The truth is, a little more than 10 years ago when I was still in manga school I had one of the worst editor meetings I’d ever had for a magazine that is now defunct. It was a male editor and not only did he insult me, his “advice” was basically thinly veiled sexual harassment.

I still can’t stop thinking about the Manga One situation. Maybe I’m naive, but I wanted to believe that the editorial environment had gotten better over the years. Maybe it has, at least with younger editors. The ones I’ve met recently have been a lot more considerate than 10+ years ago.

Ultimately my thoughts on Zeztz is that, as always, I get what Takahashi is doing but his slipshod execution ruins the effect. I am left vaguely underwhelmed by this reveal because everything leading to it needed to be ten times tighter for it to hit. He is sloppy in a way I can’t really excuse

It definitely feels like the trend as of late. Lots of wish fulfillment stories for sure. Which is fine, but it does make it difficult to pitch ideas that don't quite align that way.

Feels like there's a bit too much of a focus on self-inserting to the detriment of variety going on. Maybe I'm the problem here.

I'm happy I'm getting a chance to pitch the Jun and May story, but it's frustrating that literally no primarily shoujo/joseimuke outlet even considered it when I did portfolio reviews. I'm happy with who I'm working with (they are notably not JUST joseimuke focused, however), but idk...

I saw someone mention something about manga categories (in this case it was BL) having calcified over recent years, and that really is it, isn't it. It's just...things are really narrow right now.

....Sonic the Hedgehog, when I was around 11 or so lmao. This was pre-FF.net by a year or so, so it was on people's personal website archives. I remember printing out some of the better ones and taking them home to read with my brother since we didn't always have access to the internet at home lmao

Okay, I am now officially expanding this story with an editor, and I feel like I’m finally in my own wheelhouse for once. Just hope I can manage this between the 3048461 translation deadlines I have in the next month
