exactly! when my editor suggested taking like two full pages out I was really unsure at first until I realized I had explained everything in those pages in a single panel before just through an expression...it was such an eye opener when I figured it out!

Every time I get too in the weeds about talking about the process of creation or whatever I get really embarrassed for some reason...please note that I am only speaking for observations based on my own experience, nothing more

For clarity, when I say manga I am referring to the Japanese art of manga, but I am not defining that as art made only by Japanese people…the whole thing is nebulous, but I think there’s a lot to be gained in trying to understand the technical aspects that give us the impression of manga

I’ve always been interested in WHY that is so, and what it is that visually connects so many different styles together, but I think this idea of subtraction is probably a factor

There are different schools of thought when it comes to sequential art for sure! I’ve mentioned this in the past, but I think manga has a lot of unsaid rules that aren’t necessarily made in stone, but when not understood can make contribute to the page not looking like “manga”

I could say more, but I feel like it would be easier if I had some visual references so...maybe one day

I think a lot of us struggle with the idea that things need to be drawn in full, especially backgrounds, when (particularly when it comes to manga), you can afford to simplify things a lot more, especially if your character art is on the more detailed end.

I'd say most newer creators struggle with this, and it just comes from a lack of confidence in letting our work speak for itself without belaboring the point, but I think this can extend to the art itself as well.

I had a convo with my editor yesterday that brought this to mind. I'm entering the second half of my pitch creation (revising ch 2 and starting to draft ch 3, the last one I need before submitting), and a lot of her revisions were just taking chunks out of my draft bc my art speaks for itself.

I'm sure it's been mentioned in other places, but there really is a huge element of "less is more" when it comes to page composition

I am entertaining the thought of making videos on stuff I've learned while drawing manga here, and if I do, one of them will be on the importance of "substraction" when it comes to manga creation.

I need to translate but all I want to do is work on comics 😭

One thing that doing creative work teaches you is that ideas are worth nothing. Anybody can have an idea. In a writers room you have to come up with a hundred ideas a day, and most of those don’t make the page. It’s the work of making something that gives it value. The patina of humanity.
