Nomads solve this problem by putting a HARD stop on how many objects they carry.

What would an information version of this be?

lol. same thing happens with objects. we're pretty good at making them, but we can't keep track of them, and we refuse to throw away ones we can't tell are broken.

Wait, Larry Ellison's buying TiikTok? Like, all of it? Or just some sham American subsidiary?

Artificial Intelligence is a doomed field because it was founded upon a propaganda concept.

Would be interesting to find a root with soft, root-like heartwood that then developed into limb-like wood as became exposed & grew. Eventually you'd have successive rings of Sapwood, Limbwood, and Rootwood at the heart.

Just a speculation.

This image makes me wonder what happens when it becomes load-bearing and starts getting flexed by wind. I assume the cells notice movement and respond by beefing up structure, with lignin and cellulose.

I've been looking at & thinking about root wood for a while. Theory that it grows differently. It seems lighter than limb/trunk wood of the same tree, because it's not under stress. More like styrofoam. Only sressed at the flare.

often, I find, what separates artists from technicians is that they very quickly stop caring about the general principles behind why the tools work. just eager to get on to the results.

The demoralizing "Modernity can do it better than you" begins young.

Also it takes one or two generations to kick in. So nobody sees it happening, and there's no bad guy.

I think your intuition comes from the imagined weight-holding sensation -- the buoyancy force is negligible compared to the weight of iron. So you'd barely *feel* the load lightening as you lowered it in.

But if you pressed the ping pong ball down, you would feel the water resist.

01.06.2025 21:02 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

cool experiment! Despite being heavier than water, the water is nevertheless applying a buoyancy force on the ball, and lightening the load on it's string.

Imagine the opposite. You have a ping pong ball on a tiny stick. You push it down into the water. Doesn't that push the scale?
