Semi-retired biotechnologist and virologist, interested in making vaccines, lover of 70s rock and hard SF. And good red wine. Posts are both personal and professional, and may include music and/or strong opinions. And possibly zombies.

Interesting! There are a pile of Rybickis in Wisconsin - associated with a cheesery - another Edward Rybicki who is a retired US Air Force general, another who does material science in the US…but none are even distant relatives. My lot are straight out of Poland as one family, in 1939.

The Trojan Horse is real, and it’s microscopic! 🐴🦠
Our paper is out today in @cellcellpress.bsky.social!
We discovered that deltaviruses physically hide INSIDE helper viruses to sneak into new cells. And to prove it, we had to image them from every angle. πŸ§΅πŸ‘‡

Mechanosensation promotes broad-spectrum antiviral defense through membrane remodeling Huang et al. define the mechano-antiviral response system (MARS) and reveal that mechanical force triggers Piezo1-dependent membrane stiffening. This establishes a broad-spectrum, interferon-independe...

"Our work identifies the mechano-antiviral response system (MARS), a natural cellular defense mechanism that strengthens the host cell membrane as a physical barrier against viruses without direct viral targeting."

"Business as usual" for SARS-CoV-2, means that it looks like any other virus that jumped from a reservoir, spent a short amount of time in an intermediate host, and then jumped into humans, causing a pandemic immediately after.

1️⃣ No signs of passage
2️⃣ No signs of gain-of-function
3️⃣ It's zoonotic

There's a common misconception that zoonotic viruses require significant adaptation to jump from animals to cause human epidemics.

Not so πŸ‘‡.

Further, we see clear signs of 1977 flu experiencing cell passage, prior to epidemic.

SARS-CoV-2? Business as usual.

The American political class is utterly delusional, adrift in a dream of normality, unable to process the actual reality of events on the ground, where the US just launched a completely unprovoked war against a massive country, murdered its leadership, and demanded its conversion to a vassal state.

Development of a scalable production bioprocess for HIV-1 virus-like particles coupling continuous VLP harvesting with end-to-end downstream processing | Scientific Reports HIV-1 Gag virus-like particles (VLPs) have been drawing attention as vaccine platform for their non-infectivity, ability to induce robust immune responses and versatility. However, challenges in their production, purification, and preservation still hinder their application.

Microbial ancestor of complex life was more sophisticated than previously thought, studies suggest Our single-celled ancestor lived in a world without plants, animals or oxygen-rich oceans. Yet, this seemingly simple microorganism took the first steps toward complex life. From this ancestor emerged all multicellular (complex) life as we know it today: from yeast to blue whales, collectively known as eukaryotes. These organisms are built from cells containing specialized structures, such as a nucleus and other specialized structures, each performing distinct functions.
