Astronomers discover galaxy made of 99% dark matter | CNN A galaxy made almost entirely of dark matter, an elusive form of matter that doesn’t interact with light, was spotted by Hubble 250 million light-years from Earth.

Using the Hubble Space Telescope, researchers with NASA identified a faint β€œghost” galaxy in the Perseus Cluster that’s up to 99% dark matter and has very few stars. The discovery suggests many more nearly invisible, dark matter–dominated galaxies may be hiding in plain sight

Well, until 1988 (when we bought the house we're in now) I'd lived in 5 houses in Lusaka, Zambia (1955 - 1977), a boarding school in UK for 18 months, another in Zambia for 6 months, another in Zimbabwe for 5 years - then 9 places in Cape Town, 74 - 88. My kids grew up in this house; I'll die here!

Isolating vesicle-cloaked viruses in city and hospital wastewater Viruses such as human norovirus can travel in vesicles, small fluid-filled sacs that are like shipping containers for cells. Viruses hidden in these containers are often harder to detect and may be more infectious than free-floating viral material. In addition, their prevalence in the environment remains relatively unknown, raising public health concerns.

Chemists create complex DNA structures without hydrogen bonds No "sticky ends"? No problem. A new study by NYU chemists finds that DNA tiles can assemble into 3D structures without the sticky cohesion of hydrogen bonding. This finding, published in Nature Communications, turns a fundamental paradigm in the field of DNA self-assembly on its head.

Did plants nearly wipe out all marine life on Earthβ€”twice? UC College of Arts and Sciences Professor Thomas Algeo has been studying the planet's five major mass extinctions since the Ordovician Period, when global sea levels were much higher than today. In a paper published in Nature Ecology & Evolution, Algeo provides context for a study examining the process of colonization and spread of plants, known as terrestrialization.

Brain structure volume linked to increased social tolerance in macaques Researchers have found that the size of the amygdalaβ€”a region of the brain involved in processing emotionsβ€”could be linked to social tolerance in macaque monkeys. Their research, published today in eLife, is described by the editors as important work with a convincing methodological approach, offering new insights into the neural basis of social and emotional processing.
