I think people who say “ah, but OUR system is structurally protected from authoritarianism” are severely tempting fate. But it’s really neither here nor there: the question isn’t which system is resistant to our authoritarian moment by why it’s happening at all. And the US is not distinct in that.

This does not work as an explanation for the recent collapse of US politics because our system only recently started failing, and many countries with a parliamentary system are sliding towards hallucinatory far-right authoritarianism almost as fast as we are.
