But…this general purpose technology increasingly…does things. This is scary / impactful / potentially society-changing. I think the expected variance of how we experience our lives has gone up by a lot (3-5x?) in the last few years.

My point is this- just because you aesthetically or morally object to something, don’t assume it isn’t Important or Big. I think this is.

And I’m -not- saying l there is not a massive bubble, Elon isn’t horrible, data centers in space etc. I’m not that bsky heterodox. Just don’t be blinkered.

I’ve been a programmer for 35 years (I’m 46, for reference). I estimate my skill level as better than the median scientist, worse than the 10th percentile developer. AI tools (codex, Claude code) now easily surpass my ability and it’s not close.

I disagree this isn’t coming for other domains.

I’ve been thinking about how bsky sees AI.

1) I see many of the smart people here object on moral or humanist grounds.

2) I see some people here also object on the grounds that AI “doesn’t work”.

I sympathize with the first of these ideas, but think the second is super misguided.

Possibilities:
1) sysadmin using a dumb cloudflare default
2) conspiracy to airbrush abstracts out of the google scholar index

My hacking suggests root cause is how Cloudflare handles the Google Scholar indexer; the USRA abstract database is now being served out of Cloudflare. Seems like a setting switch is possible if USRA/LPI wanted to fix this.

It looks like it has lost the ability to link directly to LPI/USRA database, so it is falling back to more dubious sources (Ebsco, NTRS, etc). Where it fails to find a link at all, it just produces a citation page eg scholar.google.com/scholar?clus...
