A young woman who works for a food bank is putting items on a warehouse shelf. She is putting a packet of microwaveable rice onto a shelf. A headline from the Independent is on top: 'Breaking news: Britain's hunger crisis laid bare as 14 million going without food because they can't afford it.'
Over 14 MILLION people faced hunger in the UK last year due to a lack of money.
Our latest research shows:
βΌοΈ 2.5m more people are facing hunger compared to 3 years ago
πΈ 3.8m children faced hunger
πΌ Nearly 1/3 of people referred to our food banks were in a household where someone's working
White box with Independent Age logo and a light blue silhouette map of Scotland. The text reads, "More than half of older people in Scotland think the social security system works poorly for pensioners."
Scottish pensioner poverty is at a 20-year high - almost 160,000 older people.
@trussellscot.bsky.social shows food parcels for older people are up 101% over the past 5 years. Scotland needs a pensioner poverty strategy to stop this trend.

βScrapping the two-child limit would lift 670,000 people out of severe hardship.
It would mean fewer families would need to turn to a food bank, and would give children a fairer start in life.

A graphic of a Venn diagram. The top circle reads: 'low income', the circle on the right reads 'high rent and bills' and the third circle reads 'lack of health support'. The text in the middle reads 'hunger and hardship'. Text at the top of the graphic reads 'Hunger isn't one-dimensional'
People turn to food banks when they don't have enough money to survive.
Lots of people are in-between jobs, have health conditions or are looking after loved ones.
And some people are in work that doesn't pay enough to get by.
