[Facebook post from Whanganui councillor Josh Chandulal-Mackay] *Māori ward candidate profiles left out of voter information booklet* Yesterday we received the completely unacceptable news that Electionz (the company that administers the election on behalf of council) left the profiles of the Māori ward candidates out of the voter information booklet. This serious and utterly unacceptable omission will in my view raise serious questions about the legitimacy and integrity of the Māori wards election and of the Māori wards referendum. The Returning Officer has contacted each of the Māori ward candidates and apologised, with remedial action being to send separate candidate profiles to all voters on the Māori electoral roll. However, this doesn’t go far enough. All voters in the Whanganui district deserve to receive that information. After the election the Māori ward councillors represent the whole district and it’s important that all voters are able to see what all candidates stand for. In addition, the absence of that information potentially compromises the outcome of the referendum on Māori wards as voters cannot consider what the current Māori ward candidates stand for when making their decision on whether to support Māori wards beyond the next triennium. Given that voting papers began arriving yesterday, it’s inevitable that some voters will vote having not received the omitted information. Again, this seriously compromises the integrity of the Māori wards election and referendum and the legitimacy of the results is now in question. My thoughts are with all the candidates and voters affected, this is a real kick in the teeth for them at a time when the democratic stakes are already so high.
