This is Lorelei- Box for Buddy, Box for Star: Jamming on a laptop in a bedroom studio above the club somewhere along the backroads of Twang County, USA. Wields a certain clearheaded assuredness to the point of being infectious despite hopping in and out of various genre tropes. Look at my ball; it's perfect.

Waxahatchee- Tigers Blood: The art of figuring things out and totally nailing it. Katie Crutchfield's lean into country music's stylings has been such an undeniable success that I don't even mind she's not playing anything from her non-countrified releases in concert.

Wishy- Triple Seven: Shoegaze as a genre never really went anywhere, yet, at the same time, it isundeniably back. 90s nostalgia is good when it's for things l like. Dummy or GIFT could also slot in here.

Jessica Pratt- Here in the Pitch: Mood: It's 7:22 on a May morning. Our apartment is still kind of dark as the sun slowly creeps through the windows and across the floorboards of this railroad layout. The three kinds of birds in Bushwick are chirping away from perches atop trees, wires, and cornices. Spring, rebirth, is commencing its ascent across the perma-drear encompassing us. I'm starting to believe, at last, at least for a moment, things can get better. When I listen now, I can still get back there.

Mannequin Pussy- I Got Heaven: A sonic switchblade you keep in your back pocket just in case. All bark and also all bite. As complete as this band has sounded to date.

Mdou Moctar- Funeral for Justice: Anti-colonial rage channeled through locked-in rhythms and breathtaking fretboard pyrotechnics. (One of my favorite live shows of the year, too!)

MJ Lenderman- Manning Fireworks: For some reason, there was discourse around this album and whether or not MJ Lenderman is the new Neil Young? He's not. But also, Neil Young could never beat Guitar Hero. But that's all beside the point, which is that there's no better series of back-back-to-back-back home run tracks this year than Joker Lips/ Rudolph/Wristwatch/She's Leaving You. If you want to argue, I'll be trying and still failing after all these years to beat "Hangar 18" on Guitar Hero 2.

Cassandra Jenkins – My Light, My Destroyer: Feet on the grass, head in the stars. Grounded and ethereal in equal measure, a heaven on earth balance.

Charli XCX – Brat: Not every album cycle can usurp Pantone's color of the year authority, break down grammatical walls between noun and adjective (I brat, you brat, he she me brat), and convince people in conflict everywhere that the key to resolution is working it out on the remix. And yet. Making an album is hard enough. Charli has been kicking at the door of mainstream breakthrough for so long that the thing was bound to careen through the house and take out some windows, shelving, and porcelain tchotchkes once it finally flew open. TL;DR Brat good. Thank you for coming to my picture.

Ducks Ltd.- Harm’s Way: First things first: Quack quack. Charming, chiming guitar pop that jingles, jangles, and waddles Its way to glory across nine (!) tracks totaling 27 !) minutes. We love a short king.

Geordie Greep- The New Sound: Don't know what this guy is on, and don't wannd try it, but damn if he can't smash grooves, riffs, and gonzo lyrics together in a way that makes me want to write an admiring run-on sentence about it. l've been proper Greeped.
