I don't know what to take away from this story, but I'll tell you what: that was a huge lesson in understanding how your words can affect people. I never want to make that mistake again.
I'm older now. All I can do is try to be wiser. I hope it's working.

My father is the sort of man who excels at just about anything he tries, because he goes into it with an extremely disciplined mindset. Cooking, brewing, building and repairs, audio mixing... This could have been one of them.

This remains my biggest regret to this day.

I eventually put it out of my mind for years. One day while we were in the car in the middle of a move, we were chatting about game making, and I remembered Vampire Bats. I asked whatever became of it.

He was truthful. He deleted it because of my reaction, and he never made a game again.

Oh. Fuck.

Dad played it with me, and he won. He asked me what I thought of the game. Being a lil pup still working on empathy skills, not yet understanding the concept of a "sore loser", I told him the worst possible thing: "I hate it!"

I did not hate it.

I never saw it again. I looked. It was gone.

If you've played the 2011 indie game HOARD, you can see what such a concept could have developed into. Very similar. But here's where things went wrong:

Vampire Bats had what is, by today's standards, a very simple premise. The details are a bit fuzzy, but it went a bit like this:

You and an opponent are bats. You bite critters to gain blood, or bite the opponent to steal and stun them, and whoever has the most blood when time's up wins the match.

In the 80s, my father wrote a game for the Atari 800 computer called Vampire Bats. Even if you're an avid Atari fan, you've probably never heard of it, and for a good reason.

I am the reason.

And it has haunted me well into adulthood.
