An appropriately gloomy day to sneak into @wordbookstores.bsky.social in #JerseyCity to sign some copies of FIVE FUNERALS.

The sad thing about this story is that it began with an act of compassion. The mother at the center of it all was obviously unwell and just needed someone to watch her kids. The daycare said no so she did the reasonable thing and just dumped them on their doorstep and drove off. The smart thing 1/

Bad Internet Bills All of the bad internet bills. One website.

THREAD: Whenever imperialist governments go to war, they become more authoritarian at home.

That makes censorship bills like KOSA, ID checks, and attacks on Section 230 even more dangerous.

Online protest, documenting war crimes, even news articles could be suppressed.

The "How did the protestors get signs so quickly?!" crowd is really showing how dumb it is. Parts of the US ruling class have been threatening to bomb Iran for decades, and the US bombed Iran last year. It's "How did you already have rice in your cupboard?!"-level planning.

That’s all *any* of this is, too! There are no real products in and of themselves They’re not actually producing anything real that people want! None of them!! Literally none of this is about anything other than getting people to give them more money!!!

I feel goddamn insane

People will live in neighborhoods where all the houses are over $600k, send their kids to private schools, primarily socialize with other moderately wealthy people... and then tell a lefty person who makes $48k on blue sky that they live in a bubble.

Many have asked about AI and translation following the acquisition announcement. Seven Seas remains committed to human translators and the high editorial standards our readers & creators expect. Nothing about the acquisition changes how we translate our books. More info shortly.

Just FYI for all you newly minted business experts out there; acquisitions involving publicly traded companies almost never involve telling employees (or others) early to avoid the possibility of insider trading.

This is so whether you like the idea or not.

Have airstrikes by a hostile foreign country ever produced this outcome? The reactionary centrist blob keeps pretending this is part of a duly considered long-term strategy from Trump but that is not how he operates and even if it was, this is a dumb strategy.

Kemi here saying the quiet part out loud: the business of parliament is ensuring that the great looting and death machine rampages on, unimpeded by the views of silly people who don’t matter and must be ignored.

I have a character mention the MOVE bombings in this short story and not six months goes by when I don't get a letter from a reader asking either what it means to thanking me because they looked it up and it was the first they heard of it.

I lived a few streets down from the site where the Philadelphia Police Department firebombed an entire city block in 1985, and when I mention it in lecture most of my students seem absolutely incredulous

A Saudi official saying this on Al Jazeera, a Qatari media outlet, is far more telling than any nugget of information carefully leaked to an American media outlet.

This war will permanently alter the relationship of the Gulf states, the US, and Israel.

So this is your reminder that for all the talk of supporting indie bookstores, if you want more diversity, or if you want books outside the purely commercial, please make sure your store supports all kinds of authors, not just huge names by huge publishers.

User Chris: What was the core difference why you think the DoW accepted OpenAI but not Anthropic

Sam Altman:
I can't speak for them, but to speculate with the best understanding of the situation.

*First, I saw reporting that they were extremely close on a deal, and for much of the time both sides really wanted to reach one. I have seen what happens in tense negotiations when things get stressed and deteriorate super fast, and I could believe that was a large part of what happened here.

*We believe in a layered approach to safety--building a safety stack, deploying FDEs and having our safety and alignment researcher involved, deploying via cloud, working directly with the DoW. Anthropic seemed more focused on specific prohibitions in the contract, rather than citing applicable laws, which we felt comfortable with. We feel that it it's very important to build safe system, and although documents are also important, I'd clearly rather rely on technical safeguards if I only had to pick one.

*We and the DoW got comfortable with the contractual language, but I can understand other people would have a different opinion here.

*I think Anthropic may have wanted more operational control than we did

I saw some folks asking what the difference was between what OpenAI signed with the DoD and what Anthropic said they wanted, and Sam more or less admits here the key point: OpenAI's deal requires them to trust the NSA. Anthropic's contract had real safeguards.
