It would work well in the UK because people are engaged and politically literate. On the other hand, it would never work in Croatia because Croatians are nothing like Brits (except for the obsession with home ownership), lol 😆 Ideas always exist in a particular cultural and historical context.

In-person lectures are the best, but jampacked daily schedules combined with super-expensive train tickets... this can be a huge barrier to entry. What makes a difference is in-person engagement, so I would look into this direction if I were a lecturer--emphasis on in-person engagement is the key.

Oh, I see. Now everything makes perfect sense. I'm 47 years old and I was 40 when I moved from Croatia to the UK. I was politically illiterate before I moved here because Croatians believe they have 0 agency over the political process, lol, but in the meantime I evolved and changed my mind 😁

I think that the UK has a unique opportunity to learn from the mistakes from other political systems and to build a hybrid one that will offer the best of the two worlds. But the question is, what will it look like and how will we call it?

(2/3) I’ve just started the intro of your book, and I also don’t buy the idea of “civilisations”—connections tell the real story. For example, Croatians call themselves a “Catholic nation” but don’t even know Middle Eastern Christians exist. Real life is always messier than neat civilisation boxes.

(1/3) Thanks for the tip—I found it on iPlayer. There’s storytelling in there, sure, but because it’s the BBC. Croatians and other post-YU nations lean towards that dry, methodical style, lacking a sense of lived experience. Like watching life through a telescope instead of a frog’s eye view. 😅

(4/5) Storytelling really is key. While Australian First Nations sustained oral traditions for millennia, Croatians—with historically low literacy rates—became champions of collective amnesia. In Croatia history is still treated as a dry handbook of facts, not as a living narrative.

(3/5) I grew up in Yugoslavia under communism, so I know democracy isn’t the only model. What strikes me is how little Yugoslav history gets studied in Oxbridge circles. Beyond Rory Yeomans, few engage with it—even though its collapse shows how complex internal dynamics can undo a state.

(2/5) As a bilingual Croatian/Brit, studying classical and foreign languages has both broadened my outlook. But in my Croatian case, it had an ironic twist—it left me a bit alienated from Croatians, and now I sometimes feel like a foreigner in both countries, lol 😆

(2/2) For example, in Croatia there are 174 political parties. You don't have the MP you can write to. Oftentimes things end up in limbo due to dodgy post-election coalition deals, and so on and so forth. Not sure if this is a better system. But it is an important conversation.

(1/2) Just finished the episode. Very insightful because I never truly thought about it prior to moving to the UK in 2018. If I'm honest, I'm not sure that the proportional system is the answer because it doesn't work well in Croatia.

Wicked! Just found out my Gmail account was created on 2nd September 2004. It was in the early, invite-only days of the service. I remember how wild it was to get 1GB of storage. Proper digital archaeology right there.

Finished this Kafka podcast on my way to work this morning — definitely one of my favourite episodes.

In Croatian we translate The Trial as Proces, and it’s much more widely read back home. Kafka feels closer to us: after all, during his lifetime, we were all still part of Austria-Hungary.
