Is it knoppix still around? Still have a vivid memory of it being the very first distro i booted from a CD.

It would work well in the UK because people are engaged and politically literate. On the other hand, it would never work in Croatia because Croatians are nothing like Brits (except for the obsession with home ownership), lol ๐Ÿ˜† Ideas always exist in a particular cultural and historical context.

In-person lectures are the best, but jampacked daily schedules combined with super-expensive train tickets... this can be a huge barrier to entry. What makes a difference is in-person engagement, so I would look into this direction if I were a lecturer--emphasis on in-person engagement is the key.

My twin peaks newsfeed is jampacked with anti-trumpism and anti-republicanism. So strange what love does.

Oh, I see. Now everything makes perfect sense. I'm 47 years old and I was 40 when I moved from Croatia to the UK. I was politically illiterate before I moved here because Croatians believe they have 0 agency over the political process, lol, but in the meantime I evolved and changed my mind ๐Ÿ˜

Interesting. Never really thought through it much because I'm an engineer by training and everything tech related is a lot simpler, lol... Do you have a background in political science?

I think that the UK has a unique opportunity to learn from the mistakes from other political systems and to build a hybrid one that will offer the best of the two worlds. But the question is, what will it look like and how will we call it?

Screenshot of a European map comparing home ownership rates by country. Eastern Europe is very high: Romania ~96%, Slovakia ~92%, Croatia ~91%, Hungary ~90%, Lithuania ~89%, Poland ~84%, Bulgaria ~84%, Latvia ~82%, Estonia ~81%. Southern Europe is also high: Spain ~76%, Portugal ~74%, Italy ~72%, Greece ~73%. Western and Northern Europe are lower: Germany ~49%, Austria ~51%, Denmark ~59%, France ~65%, UK ~65%, Ireland ~70%, Netherlands ~69%, Belgium ~72%, Sweden ~64%, Finland ~70%, Norway ~82%. The visual highlights a sharp Eastโ€“West divide in ownership.

(3/3) One good reason UK scholars should pay more attention to so-called eastern Europeโ€”home ownership rates. That screenshot isnโ€™t AI hallucination; itโ€™s real. Better to face it now than when Nigel Farage ends up as our next prime minister ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

(2/3) Iโ€™ve just started the intro of your book, and I also donโ€™t buy the idea of โ€œcivilisationsโ€โ€”connections tell the real story. For example, Croatians call themselves a โ€œCatholic nationโ€ but donโ€™t even know Middle Eastern Christians exist. Real life is always messier than neat civilisation boxes.

(1/3) Thanks for the tipโ€”I found it on iPlayer. Thereโ€™s storytelling in there, sure, but because itโ€™s the BBC. Croatians and other post-YU nations lean towards that dry, methodical style, lacking a sense of lived experience. Like watching life through a telescope instead of a frogโ€™s eye view. ๐Ÿ˜…

(5/5) To wrap up: fantastic discussionโ€”would love to see you back on Novara Media, or even on some of my favourite podcasts like ppf+, in the future. ๐Ÿ™‚

14.09.2025 18:48 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

(4/5) Storytelling really is key. While Australian First Nations sustained oral traditions for millennia, Croatiansโ€”with historically low literacy ratesโ€”became champions of collective amnesia. In Croatia history is still treated as a dry handbook of facts, not as a living narrative.

14.09.2025 18:48 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

(3/5) I grew up in Yugoslavia under communism, so I know democracy isnโ€™t the only model. What strikes me is how little Yugoslav history gets studied in Oxbridge circles. Beyond Rory Yeomans, few engage with itโ€”even though its collapse shows how complex internal dynamics can undo a state.

(2/5) As a bilingual Croatian/Brit, studying classical and foreign languages has both broadened my outlook. But in my Croatian case, it had an ironic twistโ€”it left me a bit alienated from Croatians, and now I sometimes feel like a foreigner in both countries, lol ๐Ÿ˜†

NEW EPISODE OUT NOW!

For the first episode in a new series about the ideas that could help democracy work better David talks to @dmk1793.bsky.social of the Constitution Society about proportional representation. When will we get serious electoral reform in the UK?

(2/2) For example, in Croatia there are 174 political parties. You don't have the MP you can write to. Oftentimes things end up in limbo due to dodgy post-election coalition deals, and so on and so forth. Not sure if this is a better system. But it is an important conversation.

14.09.2025 12:56 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

(1/2) Just finished the episode. Very insightful because I never truly thought about it prior to moving to the UK in 2018. If I'm honest, I'm not sure that the proportional system is the answer because it doesn't work well in Croatia.

Wicked! Just found out my Gmail account was created on 2nd September 2004. It was in the early, invite-only days of the service. I remember how wild it was to get 1GB of storage. Proper digital archaeology right there.

NEW EPISODE OUT NOW!

Todayโ€™s episode in Politics on Trial is about the most famous trial in literature and one that never actually takes place. David talks to writer and literary scholar Ian Ellison about Franz Kafkaโ€™s The Trial, first published in 1925.

Finished this Kafka podcast on my way to work this morning โ€” definitely one of my favourite episodes.

In Croatian we translate The Trial as Proces, and itโ€™s much more widely read back home. Kafka feels closer to us: after all, during his lifetime, we were all still part of Austria-Hungary.
