Today I presented our new work at #Epidemics10 on understanding the drivers of influenza seasonality, with a particular focus on the role of indoor crowding and the built environment. It was so exciting to discuss it with so many experts in human flu! π· @bansallab.bsky.social

Our new study shows how wildfire smoke drives people indoors, potentially increasing the risk of disease spread. We highlight how health is shaped not only by direct exposure, but also by the compounding effects of how people respond to climate extremes.

Figure showing that the biggest impact on incidence is for pathogens with a short generation time like seasonal flu, with less of an effect on RSV and other respiratory pathogens
Bumping some timely work by @giuliapullano.bsky.social - wildfire smoke drives people indoors, which is problematic during respiratory virus season (now), especially for flu. But - if even 10% of people mask, it makes a big difference (and protects them from smoke!): www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1...
